TSN Season Preview : Atlanta Hawks

Post#1 » by bballCT » Fri Sep 12, 2008 2:26 am

Seems like many are expecting big things from Marvin this year:

SF - Marvin Williams
Marvin Williams finally started to round into form last year. His averages of 14.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game were both career-highs, as was his 46% shooting clip from the floor. His role on the Hawks shields him from the responsibilities and pressures applied to most second-overall picks and that might be a good thing because while Williams has shown promise he hasn't quite demonstrated that he's up to the task of being a more than a number three or four option on a team. However, the encouraging signs are that he has been a willing student in Atlanta, and as such, has thoroughly rounded out his game. He's learned to stay off of the three-point arc where his game doesn't belong (only ten attempts last season) and keep his offense confined to the mid-range and triple-threat positions. He'll be using this season to determine his value going into free agency so we'll see if his willingness to sublimate his game is trifled with at all as a result.

C - Al Horford
He may not be the kind of player that Kevin Durant is, stopping people in their tracks to marvel at what's to come, but part of that is because Horford is so complete today. He was a double-double machine as an undersized rookie centre and there was little fault anyone could find with his game. Best of all, his stats and production were elevated in the playoffs, despite going against a far bigger frontline in Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins. His offensive game could use a little bit of attention, perhaps looking to emulate the face-up game of P.J. Brown or Antonio McDyess, but after his thoroughly productive rookie season, Horford has inspired many to just leave him alone and trust that he's on the right path as a player. Avoiding the 'sophomore slump' would be a great way to repay that faith.

Did that guy seriously call JJ's playoffs a dissapointment? I can honestly say there is no way this guy watched a game of the C's series if he thinks that.

I hate sounding like Mrs. Cleaver but I think Chisholm is being a bit too hard on the Hawks. The loss of Childress (possibly the only time the Hawks made the news in Canada this summer) has him reaching for negatives across the board. "Marvin is looking really good - for a sixth man... Smoove can hide his flaws in Atlanta, he'd be exposed anywhere else... Joe Johnson was a bust in the playoffs... Flip and Mo are just stop-gaps... They didn't express the need for a center... Smoove is better off as a SF..."

I have enjoyed some of Tim's other Eastern Conference assessments so far, but I'm suspecting he finished 90% of his Hawks preview the day Chillz bolted to Olympiakos.

Oh yeah eh, we need a "centre".

I've yet to hear a convincing deal to get us a difference maker at center. Chris Kaman, Andrew Bogut, and Sam Dalembert would not turn us into a better team just because they bump their heads on more ceilings.

I actually emailed this guy (I think it was him, I know it was the TSN guy) after reading his thing last season when he kept saying that our starting lineup would feature Smith-Horford-Zaza/Shel and told him that Smith started at PF and he actually emailed me back. Said something along the lines of, "if they start Smith at PF they are in a lot worse shape than last season"...

The Marvin is wise to know his limitations and stay away from the 3 pt line was the part that struck me as poor analysis. Most Hawks fans on this board have come to the conclusion that Marvin needs to develop a 3 pt shot for many reasons like opening up the interior for Horford and Josh by stretching the D, keeping Josh on the interior instead, and causing the defense to honor Marvin more closely which should give him more driving opportunities to blow by someone. Watching how smooth Marvin's release is, it seems likely that he should be able to add to his range. Lots of pros do that as they develop.
