NET PER is Your PER minus the PER of the Player you are guarding

Player **************** 2009 NET PER ******** 2008 NET PER ********* Change

Ray Allen *************** + 9.4 ******************** + 5.9 *************** + 3.5
Kevin Garnett ********* + 8.0 ******************** +16.0 *************** - 8.0
Tony Allen ************* + 6.2 ******************** + 1.5 *************** + 4.7
Paul Pierce ************ + 2.8 ******************* +10.2 *************** - 7.4
Leon Powe ************ + 2.6 ******************** + 4.0 **************** - 1.4
Kendrick Perkins **** - 1.2 ********************* - 1.6 **************** + 0.4
Eddie House ********** -3.1 ******************** + 1.6 ***************** - 4.7
Rajon Rondo ********* -3.3 ********************* + 1.4 **************** - 4.7
Glen Davis *********** - 7.5 ********************* - 3.0 **************** - 4.5
Patrick O'Bryant ** - 11.4
Brian Scalabrine ** - 15.3 ******************** - 7.8 ***************** - 7.5
Gabe Pruitt ******** -26.4 ********************* -2.2 ****************** -24.2
Bill Walker ********* -41.8

Well, so let's see, compared to last season, the following players decreased by this amount

Kevin Garnett minus 8 (was 2nd best in NBA last year)
Brian Scalabrine minus 7.5
Paul Pierce minus 7.4 (was 10th best in NBA last year)
Rajon Rondo minus 4.7
Eddie House minus 4.7
Glen Davis minus 4.5
Leon Powe minus 1.4
Gabe Pruitt minus 24.2

completely obscures the improvement by these players

Tony Allen +4.7
Ray Allen +3.5
Kendrick Perkins +0.4

A lot of guys have to step up their games.

Hopefully KG and House will start to shoot better soon.

I think Rays/Tony's counterpart PERs are mixed up slightly. Ray gets credit for playing 14% of minutes @ SF (presumably when playing alongside Tony) whereas Tony gets credit for playing all of his minutes just about @ SG. Per 82games.com When Ray plays SF his counterpart is posting a PER of 0.2, but I'm guessing thats Tony's doing.

That said counterpart PER clearly does not usually tell the whole picture and is one of a variety of viable metrics out there. And our whole offense simply hasn't been functioning well. Once that changes so will the data above.
