Do you think Durant should be shooting more?

Post#1 » by Goubot » Wed Nov 26, 2008 3:52 am

Note: I don't see many OKC games, but I have been following Durant since his days in Texas. This springs from a discussion from another board.

Obviously, defenses key in on him, but in spite of that, he's by far the most efficient player from the field other than Joe Smith. He and Smith are the only ones to shoot over 46%. Smith, while useful, has difficulty creating his own shots.

Other than those two, OKC has been downright awful at making shots. Westbrook (he's particularly egregious), Watson, Mason, Petro, Wilkins, and even Wilcox (I imagine he'll come around) are all shooting terribly, and they're shooting a lot. So far, Durant has been the only player on the team who can create a large volume of shots that have a reasonable chance of going in, so do you think he should have an even bigger role in the offense? Getting Durant more shots will probably lower his percentages and further increase his turnovers, but honestly, that seems still seems like a better proposition than a yet another Westbrook chuck. Thoughts?

I think the key part of your post is when you said GETTING durant more shots. Him CREATING shots really gets kind of ugly with the double teams that are sure to come with the rest of the offense being not-so-great. He hasn't really shown me that he's great at creating shots for himself or others, more just awesome at executing when shots are created for him. I think that's probably why you see Westbrook and Watson especially, shooting more than you'd like. They're the only ones creating any kinds of shots. I'm not saying it's right or that it shouldn't change, that's just how it is right now. We really just need a scoring 2 to go with Durant and Westbrook...

Yes, I agree, Durant at small forward should help everyone, most notably HIM

I do not want him to focus on his own game.....

I want him to focus on defense as a team ... rebound as a team

and get his points in the flow of the game

agreed, although I think it will be far easier for him to do that while playing a more natural SF position...

He needed to be surrounded by some better players. If he shoots more, he will be like a T-Mac back in Orlando. It will do no good to the team or him.

SO I guess just wait and let others develop like Jeff Green or Wilkins.

Durant's supporting case sucks. Green looks like he is coming around, and the coaching staff finally got a clue and have started Westbrook.

Durant should not be shooting more if it means he is gonna be forcing up shots like he did when he was playing the 2 guard spot. Now that he is back at his natural position, it really will open things up for him and the team, especially opportunities to create for his teammates. Yeah, he's not working with much, but since he is back at the spot he is best suited (what in the hell was PJ thinking putting him at shooting guard?) he can just play his game and let the shots come within the flow of the game.

I caught glimpses of the Memphis game. Durant still took a few shots that had virtually no shot of going in (a few poorly wrought pullups and contested midrangers in the first quarter). These weren't even bailout shots, and they weren't within the offense. Shot selection still seems to be an issue, and he and the team would be well served if he cut some shots like that out of his game. He caught fire in the second half when he avoided long jumpers, and he showed glimpses of the KD that you could have night in and night out down the road. The move to SF should be good for him.

Jeff Green is looking decent so far, and I think it's a good idea to avoid starting Earl Watson, which is fine because Westbrook seems to be making better decisions with the ball since the coaching change.

Didn't PJ start Durant at the 5 one game? Or am I making that up? I remember the 2 guard fiasco days, but I have a faint recollection of him being started there.

Pretty bad ....
I love Westbrook but also yes. Durant shot at least shoot the ball 20 times in a game to me.
I think life for OKC life as a team would just be so much easier if Durant got the ball more.
