McCarthy's day-after press conference: Panthers game
By Greg A. Bedard of the Journal Sentinel
Dec. 1, 2008 12:29 p.m.

Green Bay - Mike McCarthy has started his press conference:

* Derrick Frost will be released today. The Packers don't even have a replacement ready. That's how bad they want him out.
* Matt Flynn will be the holder.

About damn time. Still really pisses me off that they wouldn't let Ryan go to that kicking specialist.

This was really bungled by TT/MM. I know Stock pushed for Frost but you don't let your special teams coach dictate player moves. And why the hell do it now? It's not like he's worse than he was a few weeks ago.

Now you have a new guy holding AND cold weather. Brilliant.

And what about this from the presser:

McCarthy does not regret the playcall to John Kuhn because the linebackers were in pass coverage.

We brilliantly didn't have any receivers in, I don't know why McCarthy thinks the Lions were playing pass.

Despite his best performance since Week 1, Derrick Frost’s days as the Green Bay Packers’ punter could be numbered.

The Packers on Monday worked out four punters, including former Bay Port High School and University of Wisconsin standout Ken DeBauche and former Pro Bowler Scott Player.

DeBauche spent part of the offseason on the Packers’ roster. He signed with his hometown team as a rookie free agent just a few hours after the April draft and went through the organized team activities and the mandatory minicamp. He was cut on July 24, just five days before the first practice of training camp.

DeBauche has been living in Milwaukee and made the drive to Green Bay on Monday. It was his first workout since the Packers released him. He worked out inside Lambeau Field along with Player, Zac Atterberry and Waylon Prather and long snapper Kevin Garvoille, according to the NFL transaction wire that is sent to all 32 teams but not released to the public.

“I thought it went well,” DeBauche said. “I was pretty optimistic coming out of it in that I knew I punted well.”

Player was the only NFL veteran among the group. The 38-year-old played for the Arizona Cardinals from 1998 to 2006 and made the Pro Bowl in 2000. He punted last season for the Cleveland Browns and was signed by the New England Patriots this offseason but did not make the team. In 727 career punts, he has averages of 43.1 yards (gross) and 36.1 yards (net).

Atterberry, who played at Lindenwood University, spent time on the Chicago Bears’ roster this offseason. Prather, of San Jose State, was with the New Orleans Saints in the preseason and was on the New York Jets’ practice squad briefly last month. Both are rookies.

After a solid first week, Frost struggled in three straight games before turning in an improved performance against Atlanta on Sunday. He punted three times and finished with averages of 41 yards (gross) and 40 yards (net) with one kick inside the 20.

Like DeBauche, Garvoille has ties to the state. He played at UW-Whitewater through 2003 and grew up in Oregon, which is near Madison.

DeBauche has a leg. He has proven college success. Wouldn't mind him.

Gee we're actually going to work out punters before signing one. What a novel approach.

One of the things I thought as well. Maybe they thought tight ends would go out? The more concerning thing is he thought about going for it on 4th down and would've ran the same play he did on 2nd down. Yikes.

This one confused me. He was brought in last spring, cut before training camp. They worked him out and I don't think he's picked up with anybody. Having success in college and local roots, one would think he would've had every chance at getting the job. Interesting. Kind of like Kevin Stemke, never hung on in the NFL.

Move is too little, too late. But it needed to be done. Hope it doesn't have an effect on Crosby since this will be his 3rd holder this year (counting preseason).

Green Bay - Here are some of the comments special teams coordinator Mike Stock made this afternoon about the release of punter Derrick Frost:

On the field position game
I don't think we lost too many of those last year. What plays into that a lot of the time is punting. Punting is a big part of hidden yardage because it's all about punting the ball. When your offense doesn't get the first downs and then you have to give it back to them, hopefully you give it back to them with a 40-yard net. We did that a bit last year so we had access, at least field position wise, to field position that was a little bit better for the defense going on the field. We didn't have enough of that this year.

On Derrick Frost's release
Feel bad for him. It was an opportunity for him and it didn't work out.

How much of a role did you have in Jon Ryan's release and bringing in Frost?
This is the Green Bay Packers organization. The Green Bay Packers.

Is it disappointing for you...
It's disappointing for me because I'm responsible for coaching the kid, obviously. He kicked really well Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, just have to carry it over to Sunday too. That's the problem.

Have you ever seen that?
No I have not. I've never been involved (in something) like that before with a guy who has talent, which he does that has not at least been able to put a couple games together. It's not like this game can't do it. He can do it.

Why did he have that problem?
You'd have to ask him about that. Well, I think the poor guy in that regard, I think the poor guy, he probably got a little bit struck having to leave Washington the way he did although they drafted a kid from Georgia Tech and then they end up cutting him too. But they were going to keep (Durant Brooks) unless (Frost) kicked lights out and that didn't happen I guess the way he wanted it to there either. So I think he was a little bit out of sorts.

Confidence-wise?
Probably, sure in a lot of ways maybe in spite of the fact that he'd been around the league a while to know those things happen. It's a performance-driven league, you know that. And we all have to do better or we're not going to be here.

Will you have a bunch of guys come in on Tuesday?
Well, we've worked out a bunch of guys already and then there will be some more. I haven't seen the list. Nobody has said anything to me. I think they're working something out with whatever they're going to do as far as trying some guys out.

Did you give up too soon on Ryan?
I don't want to look back. It's just one of those things where we made the decision and we're living it.

By cutting Frost you admit that you made a mistake, don't you?
(No audible answer). The decision was the decision so as it turns out Frost doesn't fulfill our expectations or his either. That's the bottom line. The expectations...It's not like the kid doesn't have talent. He's got talent. Fulfilling the expectations is another thing and he didn't do it.

Are we dealing with a Steve Sax syndrome here?
I don't know. I can't answer that. Don't know.

Thompson didn't want to get rid of Ryan but Stock insisted on Frost. Thompson saw some tape of Frost and liked what he saw but still was reluctant to make move because Crosby and Ryan were best friends on the team and he didn't want to disrupt Crosby's flow or chemistry. This move falls solely on Stock because he told TT that if it didn't turn out that he would be accountable and thats how much faith he had in Frost. Stock to this day still wanted Frost as our Punter but TT decided enough was enough. I could see this move being a strong factor in Stock losing his job after this season

Who asked the "Steve Sax" question? Man, I haven't heard that name in years and years.

I don't think punters are very important in the grand scheme of things unless you have one that's just terrible, but the whole Ryan/Frost fiasco was one of the more baffling things to understand this year.

They need to make a quick decision and get the new guy practicing. Hopefully we'll hear something today yet.
