Cashman has been consistently acting (Please Use More Appropriate Word) so far this offseason. He extends Marte for no good reason (I don't care if he's a lefty, they don't need him). Then he keeps J.B. Cox, a more useful asset at this point, off the 40-man, pretty much assuring he gets Rule V'd. Now he seems to be tanking the farm. I get not risking Pudge accepting, I can even see Pettitte's arb. settlement being too high to risk, but Abreu? In the off chance that he can't find a multi-year deal elsewhere, one more year of him wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, even with his defense going to ****.

i understand pettite and ivan, but not abreu

leaving cox unprotected is so stupid, wasnt he once considered our future closer?

I'm not worried about Cox. He hasn't been great recently and his fastball was clocked around 88-91 MPH. His control is off and he just doesn't have it anymore. Melancon is more the future closer than Cox. Regardless, I doubt we lose him, remember if a team selects him he has to make the 25 man roster and stay there the entire year or they have to offer him back to the Yankees for $25,000. He isn't major league ready yet and it's doubtful a team would take that chance. The minors are stacked with guys with good stuff that project to be bullpen arms, I'm not worried at all. I would imagine a bigger risk would be someone like Alan Horne who was hurt most of last year but was very promising and got his stuff together near the end. You could easily see a bad team take a shot on him and see what happens. Horne has the stuff and makeup for a solid number 3 pitcher, maybe a number 2 if everything panned out.

As for Pettitte and Abreu I can see why they did it. I don't agree with it but I see that they want to limit the payroll in case those guys don't get the deals they are looking for. With Pettitte, they look themselves into a one year deal worth about $15 million or more. I think they want to bring him back for around $12 million. So it's a simple mathematical thing, it's highly unlikely that he goes anywhere else. Abreu is more interesting because he was a Type A free agent. He hasn't gotten offers and I think the Yankees were afraid he would accept. Taking into account Cashman's meeting with Boras in California today, my guess would be the Yankees are in pursuit for a bat as well as CC and another pitcher. They probably want to use Abreu's money towards that bat, maybe Teixiera. If Abreu was to accept and come back, they would ruin that plan as then they would have to go well over where they want to be in terms of salary. -Jitpal

^ yah the same reason, Burnett and lowe, Manny and Tex havent signed...

look back a few years, most deals didnt/dont get done until the winter meetings. thats when agents can feel out everyone. what better way to see who wants what client, then have all teams just a door knock away

For a few reasons, the Yankees front office has clearly soured on Cox tremendously. They felt it would be more important to protect some higher ceiling guys rather than a reliever who will likely end up being nothing more than a middle reliever.

As for the arbitration, I am surprised they didn't offer to Abreu. Everybody else I understand, but Abreu will more than likely get a multi year offer. We'll see if they know something we don't.

I also like re-signing Marte. He has excellent stuff and is a lefty, those are guys you have to keep giving chances to.

I don't really see where Chris Britton or Cody Ransom are more worthwhile keepers than Cox though. His stock has gone down recently, but I still like his chances as a quality middle reliever. Even if they're just saving those spots for free agents, I don't see the point of dumping Cox and giving a multi-year deal to Marte. Marte will be 34 next season and i've never been too keen about his walk rate. If they insist on having a lefty around in the pen (I think the need for a lefty is overrated; they're a luxury more than a necessity), Phil Coke has looked pretty good as a reliever so far.
