Sorry, I'm unfamiliar with the rule. For instance, the Cavaliers have 5 years of Bird Years for LeBron, meaning it's now Bird Rights. Well, if they traded him to NY, would NY retain the bird rights?

Yep. Bird rights are gained through not changing teams as a free agent.
