Official UW Recruiting Thread

Post#1 » by Bernman » Mon Dec 22, 2008 3:50 am

The search function here stinks and I think the old one got erased anyways, so I'm starting a new thread on account the Badgers reeled in a big fish today.

The player's name is Pat Muldoon, a D-Lineman, from the Cincinnati area. Had a ton of offers, including in-state OSU originally. I'd say he's the most coveted out of state recruit the Badgers have landed since, at the very least 2005, but more realistically dating all the way back to 2001 (Anttaj Hawthorne).

Here's more information on him including videos and pictures: http://www.recruitingplanet.com/forum/w ... offer.html

Between him, Jordan Kohout, David Gilbert, Tyler Dippel, and Shelby Harris; the Badgers have gone along way this cycle to short up the depth and talent problems they've suffered with the D-Line the last few years.

We've also reportedly picked up a big-time wide receiver, but at this juncture don't know exactly who it is. Stay tuned on that front.

I'll probably eventually make a mix of the players ala last year, only this year focus on quality over quantity.

The defensive line has been the worst recruited position under Bielema, IMO, so this is good news. Who is the WR we might be close with Bern? Kraig Appleton?

There was a rumour that Appleton committed to UW on a St. Louis radio station a while back. That was like a couple days after he announced he was going to Illinois. He's been back and forth more than a seesaw during his recruitment. He might be doing it all to drum up drama for his recruitment....who knows. He'll announce at the All American game between Illinois and UW. He'd be another signature commit for Bucky.

It could also be former OSU recruit Bradley McDougald. http://www.recruitingplanet.com/forum/w ... offer.html Although I think he projects more to the free safety position, where we also need help as you know.

Outside of those two I'm not sure of other possibilities.

He is a 3 star recruit, not that much to get excited over, but time will tell. Wisconsin is still ranked about 40th in team recruiting.

I go to UW and my best friend lives in Ogg Hall in the room next door to Curt Phillips and Joe Schafer. Is Phillips pegged to be the for sure starter next season? I would love to UW have a 4 year QB for once.

He lost a star after eliminating all of the "name" schools from his list. His final five didn't have very large fan bases among his choices so his star is sacrificed for somebody else who did. The star-rating system is a lot about politics and selling subscriptions.

Look at the guy's friggin offer list: OSU, Michigan, Bama, PSU, Notre Dame, Va Tech

Speaks for itself.

He needs a good recruiting class because the team has been worse every year since he took over. Hopefully the class of 2009 can give us some immediate help.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

According to Rivals' Wisconsin site, the Badgers received a silent verbal from former OSU free safety/punt returner Bradley McDougald. Check out his video in this thread: http://www.recruitingplanet.com/forum/w ... offer.html OSU reneged on his offer because of minor off the field problems. They can afford to be more picky than a school like Wisconsin. I think McDougald is a hell of a talent and will help shore up a position that needs it desperately.

Just yesterday, a large DT from Florida named Conor O'Neal committed. Coincidentally, Wisconsin has another defensive commit from the same state named Conor O'Neill. O'Neal is the only DT w/ the size to be a space eater since Brandon Hoey of September of '05. Hoey had tremendous promise before he succumbed to career ending back problems. Not much video to speak of on O'Neal, but here's his thread: http://www.recruitingplanet.com/forum/w ... erbal.html Wisconsin finally compiled a DT with balance and talent.

Luke, it has indeed been confirmed that Appleton was the wide receiver in question. He was supposed to publicly announce it at the All American game but Appleton had a family matter which prevented him from making the trip. My guess is we're still waiting because he had promised to make a trip to Illinois later this month. He's probably in the Wisconsin camp as of now but he's so back and forth we'll have to wait til signing day to feel comfortable.

It's also highly likely we'll land Ohio OT Chris Freeman, who has a myriad of offers including: Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, Florida St., Miami, Oregon, Missouri, UCLA, West Va., etc. Former OSU S&T coach Joe Rudolph has been a major shot in the arm to our recruiting in Ohio.

Funny you say that, I friend of mine from school who happens to be a Ohio State/Wisconsin sport junkie was just raving about this guy. I consider myself someone who follows UW sports pretty closely but never knew of this guy so its funny to hear someone else talk about Rudolph.

Re: Official UW Recruiting Thread (Signing Day, Big signing)

Post#13 » by Bernman » Wed Feb 4, 2009 4:18 pm

It's signing day today as some seemed to have noticed, and the Badgers are making waves having just signed top wide receiver prospect, from Illinois, Kraig Appleton.

http://www.recruitingplanet.com/forum/w ... offer.html

It's unfortunate Wisconsin saw one public verbal decommit recently (the aforementioned DT, O'Neal) and on reported silent verbal as well (McDougald); but the coup of procuring Appleton out of Illinois fuses a class together nicely that was lean on skill players previously.

I'd expect one or two more unknowns to be announced during the SD presser which culminate the class.

Budamyr/Phillips will both have a shot to be pretty good.

Hell, I think either of my grandmas (RIP) had more talent that Sherer.

I like Clay/Brown/Ball going forward. Thank God PJ Hill declared. He was a serviceable back but it was hard to watch him knowing that he just wasn't that good. Maybe Dex Jones mixes in as well? Don't know how he looked last year.

I like Appleton and Toon came on strong at the end of last year. We've got a few big targets there and maybe one of the other young jokers can finally come through.

Gilreath is a decent speed/playmaker. Probably as good as UW is going to get.

Phillips/Budamyr may not be Leak/Tebow but it at least gives me hope.

We are building up the D-line again. Hopefully we have some LBs that understand the concepts of defensive football behind them (as in no Hodge por favor).

Secondary is meh. Henry should be good. Hopefully Jim Leonhard makes babies (male) in the near future.

Next year I see a young team going 7-5/8-4.

After that, I see a pre-season top 10 and actually having a chance to live up to it.

As a Gopher Alum living in Madison, I find this to be an amusing Sports Nation Poll.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?sportIndex=frontpage&pollId=67199

I think people are starting realize Bielema is a poor recruiter and he has lived off of Alvarez's players for the most part. I was still surprised by the poll results though because Appleton was a huge last second get for the Badgers, thought that would really put a smile on Badger fans' faces.
