Defending the 3 & taking the 3

Post#1 » by Red2 » Fri Jan 16, 2009 2:36 pm

Every team in the NBA uses the 3 point shot but some more than others. The Pacers, Raptors, Orlando come to mind and against the Celts this has been an effective way to play them since our rotation to the 3 point line this year has not been as good as last year. One of the big reasons for this is that Posey defended the 3 point line very well- better than Pierce and Ray Allen. In the last 3 games though since Scal has been in the lineup we have defended the 3 pt shot much better. Scal did a great job closing out on Bargnani and without Kendrick in the lineup our starting unit is much quicker.Scal has also provided an additional 3 point threat that we lost with Posey. I hesitate to say that we are a better team with Scal starting than Perk but we seem to have found our offensice rythm again and a big part of that has been taking the 3 point shot. with another 3 point shooter in the lineup we can spread the floor better. One of the problems for this team has been that we get off to slow starts. With Scal in the lineup this hasn't happened. Of course we give up size and strength in the post and when we play phoenix we may get killed down low without Perk. But it seems to me that while we still want to play inside out Doc is starting to recognize that we need to make the 3 point shot a bigger part of our offense. It's a balancing act becuase teams that live by the 3 die by the 3 but without Perk we need to rely on the 3 point shot more right now
