Could the Lions beat Florida or USC?

Post#1 » by Tilted Brim » Mon Jan 19, 2009 1:39 am

My brother in law and I were discussing the fact of whether the Lions could be the top ranked collegiate teams. What do you think, could the Lions beat Florida or USC?

It wouldn't even be close. Tebow wouldn't be able to do anything with all of the pressure and Calvin Johnson would light up both teams.

College football idiots don't know anything. It will be an easy win for the Lions, the first easy win for them in a decade.

Lions would probably be favored to win by 18+ and I would easily take them.

USC or Florida would probably lose to most CFL teams.

Better question is could a team of college all-stars beat an NFL team. There used to be a game that pitted the defending SB Champions vs a team of college seniors. The collegians were 9-33.

The Lions would win 8 or 9 times out of 10 against USC.

an excellent question, and heres the definite answer. they would absolutely destroy florida. but lose to USC. the problem is the style of offense, the spread. that stuff is specifically for college football, when faced with inferior talent and inferior speed. but when matched up with comparable talent and speed(see parts of oklahoma), it struggles and can be taken.
USC however, has a traditional offense that can combat speed on the outside or powerful fronts.

secondly, DEFENSE. our defense has linebackers that can run and will not get overpowered. floridas front though is really weak. (again, see oklahoma when bradford lines up under center). they get blown back and big chunks against their D. USCs defense is the best defense in the nation. period. hands down.

3rd, preparing for that 1 game. for 1 game, pete carrol can prepare and outcoach detroits staff.

I agree that the Lions would win, but I think they'd be closer games than most of you seem to be thinking. The Lions really are quite poor and would be severely out coached. I would expect high scoring games.

I wonder if we keep seeing 1st and 2nd seeds failing to advance, if we'll ever see an NFL coach try to organize a scrimmage with a college team during the bye week. The logistics would be ugly, but it'd be something to see.

Pete Carroll is still the coach of USC, right?

Yeah, that wouldn’t happen.

they would dismantle both teams....they are in the nfl for a reason, maybe not the best nfl players, but better than average college players

I think USC's defense would hold up ok against the Lions. I'm talking about giving up around 30 pts still, but I doubt the Lions would just be able to score on them at will. USC's back 7 is basically comprised of NFL players already. Lions OL would destroy their DL though, both b/c they're NFL players, but also b/c they're older and much stronger.

Any college offense though would have no chance against an NFL defense. Too many holes on the offensive line against an NFL team, and college QB's are usually unprepared to face NFL speed. Also, USC doesn't have anyone at the WR or RB position that are top prospects anyway.

If its a completely healthy lions team they win hands down

But if its the injured team that took the field week 17, especially with orvlosky at QB, it would be a close game
