2 questions regarding contract signings

Post#1 » by skorff26 » Wed Feb 25, 2009 12:08 am

First question
If a team offers a free agent a 5 year contract (he doesn't have any rights to that player), can he offer a large salary the first year and then way less for the following years?
Ex. 1
Year 1 - 14 million
Year 2 - 8 million
Year 3 - 8 million
Year 4 - 8 million
Year 5 - 8 million

Second Question (Only if first question is that it's allowed)
If a team offers the same contract as in Ex. 1 but has the 5th year at a large increase in price is that allowed
Year 1 - 14 million
Year 2 - 8 million
Year 3 - 8 million
Year 4 - 8 million
Year 5 - 15 million
-since if you use the 1st years salary of 14 million x 1.32; it does fit; but would a team be allowed to have an increase from year 4 to 5 in a contract

The decreases allowed in a contract follow the same formula as the increases, so no, neither of those are allowed.

In addition, in your second scenario, while the amount of the raise/pay cut allowed from year-to-year is based off of the first year of the deal, they are applied to the previous year's salary, so it wouldn't be allowed on those grounds, either.
