Offical Free Agent Thread

Post#1 » by Flaming Mo » Fri Feb 27, 2009 10:48 am

I looked around the web a bit and I try to give an update from what I've read and heard. Mostly I get my information from jetsinsider.net. The Jets once again have a lot of money to spend in free agency and they look like they are going to be aggressive just like last season. We got numerous holes to fill on both sides of the ball, especially on defense. The releases of Coles and Moore also opened two holes on offense and as they were both starters they have to be replaced with quality players.

Bart Scott couldn't agree on a deal with the Ravens and he's now officially on the open market. It is rumored he has already planned a visit with the Jets and the Rams. He fits our defense perfectly, as all other Ravens loves Ryan and Pettine and we would sign him for the best years of his career, unlike in case of Ray Lewis who is also rumored to be on the Jets radar.

The Jets also seem to be heavily interested in CB Jabari Greer. He's another guy who fits our defense well, would fill a huge need as the second CB opposite of Darrelle Revis and he has the speed to play man to man on the outside. I read that he's asking for about 7 million and that might be a bit much for the Jets but I say we should give him that money. He's only 26 years old, knows the division and we would finally get a proven number two CB and we wouldn't have to plug a rookie in there.

Another guy the Jets have already made an offer to is Pittsburgh G Chris Kemoeatu. The latest is he has two very similar offers from the Steelers and the Jets on the table at around 4 million. He would be the replacement for Brandon Moore and fits right in with what we are trying to do which is being a physical, punishing rushing attack. He would also seem like a long term replacement for Alan Faneca at LG once he is done in a few years as he actually replaced Faneca at that position in Pittsburgh. Another option at G is young and upcoming Ravens interior lineman Jason Brown but the Jets don't seem to look that hard at him. Derrick Dockery, released by the Bills after signing a big contract two years ago, would be another guy to look at but he is already in talks with the Redskins from what you hear.

Many expected the Jets to sign Ravens S Jim Leonhard as soon as the free agency period began. Nothing is official yet but it seems highly unlikely that he goes anywhere else than New York.

There was a rumor on ESPN that the Jets might be involved in a three way deal that nets them Braylon Edwards and would finally give them a true number one receiver. I don't know if this has any legs or what the Jets would have to give up but it further proves that the Jets are looking to address all their needs through free agency to have the maximum flexibility in the draft. That would be the ideal scenario so we don't have to draft for needs and can go BPA in every round or move around for the guys we really want.

FB Tony Richardson resigned with the Jets for around 500.000 for one year. Good move.

Right now I think we are looking at the current starters and the following needs:

QB Brett Ratliff
FB Tony Richardson
RB Thomas Jones
WR XXX
WR Jerricho Cotchery
TE Dustin Keller
LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson
LG Alan Faneca
C Nick Mangold
RG XXX
RT Damien Woody

DE Shaun Ellis
NT Kris Jenkins
DE Kenyon Coleman
OLB Bryan Thomas
ILB David Harris
ILB XXX
OLB Calvin Pace
CB Darrelle Revis
FS Kerry Rhodes
SS XXX
CB XXX

K Jay Feely
P XXX

Some players that I viewed as starters might also be on the verge of being replaced. A guy like Kenyon Coleman for example doesn't seem to be the ideal fit for the aggressive defense Rex Ryan brings in and we might want to upgrade that spot. For now though he is servicable and it isn't a major need by any means. We also need some depth among both lines but with the money we have for free agents, we could clearly address that in the draft. An ideal scenario would definitely be, as mentioned, if we get an ILB, S, CB, RG and maybe even a WR in free agency. I don't know if we can fill all these spots but I think the perfect players for our needs are out there and we should spend the money that we have.
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies...

Kemoeatu officially resigned with the Steelers. So much for replacing Moore with him...

Corey Ivy was at the Jets facility today. He's no more than a solid backup though. Solid depth signing if we don't pay a lot of money for him yet we would still need a second CB opposite of Revis.

The Scott signing is turning into a frenzy with changing reports almost every 10 minutes. Ravens are in it again and there might be a bidding war going on between them and the Jets. We got 10 million more than the Ravens in cap space, just as an information...

Update on Bart Scott: Sirius Radio, ESPN Radio and local Baltimore stations are reporting that he is officially a New York Jet! Team is expected to announce it within an hour... let's hope it's true this time...

We re-signed Brandon Moore with Kemoeatu going back to the Steelers. 4 years/$16 million with $10 million guaranteed.

Updating the Jets' Needs: WR, SS (What's the latest on Leonhard), Punter and to a slightly lesser extent QB

We could also use an upgrade at DE but your the needs you posted are much bigger, especially WR, S and P. Leonhard is scheduled to visit the Jets today from what I heard.

Yeah, I heard the same thing on Leonhard. I still say we should try out Gholston at DE and see where it goes. Hell, even use some PreSeason games on that.

I also believe we need a K. Both Feely and Nugent declared for free agency.

We resigned Jay Feely to a one year deal. Very solid move as he did really well last year especially on field goals.

C.J. Mosley was signed by the Browns. Too bad, he played well last year and has some upside rushing the passer. The Jets are rumored to be interested in DL Marques Douglas (Ravens) and DT Howard Green (Seahawks). Both would be backups on the defensive line and would basically replace Mosley on the depth chart. Green could be penciled in as a backup NT behind Jenkins, but he was out of football two years ago so you see how much upside there is. I would have just kept Mosley instead of Douglas but we gotta trust Rex Ryan on that. Atleast Douglas knows the system and should have no problem filling in wherever he is needed.

The Jets also are interesting in TE Billy Bajema from the 49ers. His only role would be to help as a blocker in the run game as he has something like 6 career catches I think. Nothing special but we need another TE. I would have rather gone after Robert Royal who recently signed with the Browns but whatever.

Gonna be interesting to see if the Jets make any more moves in free agency but I get the feeling that they are fine with what they've done for the starting units. It seems as they now will make a few more cheaper signings for depth purposes and then set their sights on the draft to maybe add a few more impact players...

I would love the move if Holt is on board and buys into everything we want to do. He's an exceptional receiver and even though he'll be 33 at the beginning of the season, his experience and presence alone could do wonders for our offense and the confidence of our young QB. Even though it was right to get rid of Coles, we still lost a surefire 70 catches and about 800-900 yards here. While Clowney, Stuckey and rookie receiver might develop and produce, you just can't go into the season with so many unknowns in your receiving corps. You just can't bank on these guys. Holt I think would be a great veteran presence in the locker room and if he comes at the right price (big if) then I would be all for it... I just think we have to add more than just a rookie, atleast some proven guy even if he won't get us more than 60 catches and about 800 yards...

Regarding Holt Id love to have him, personally he has been a favorite of mine for years and can still stretch the field. Dont overlook the fact that we got the Rams WR coach, so there is familiarity between the two. However Holt needs to be released, we shouldn't trade for him unless we get him for a Lito type deal.

Regarding Izzo. The new Bowens, but better. All I really have to say about him.

We also signed Howard Green who played with Ryan back in 02.

So Holt was just released...could we go after him now? Seriously, we fill in a huge need and a veteran leader on the offense at the same time.

I think he is a perfect stop gap for us. He can still stretch the field and take pressure off Cotchery. We have his old WR coach from the Rams so there is some familiarity between them.
