thank you Mr. Rajon Rondo

"I don't like to talk trash, but in my eyes it's not a rivalry. I don't know if anybody else looks at it as a rivalry. People consider Cleveland a rival. We just went seven with Atlanta. That's about it."

Rajon Rondo
Boston Celtics

this is a great comment to have said about you, just before the Playoff starts. if Woody is smart, he would post this up on the locker room, and tell the team that the league still doesn't respect us.

Harry, why should any of the best teams respect us? We won't win a series against Boston or Cleveland if we can't win on the road. Hell, we can't even beat Boston at home!

One good first round playoff series does not make a rivalry. Even the Hawks themselves would agree on that.

Um Just because Rondo said that the Hawks and Celtics are not rivals how does that translate into "The league does not respect us."

It also does not mean the hawks are not a good team because they are. I mean the celtics and spurs are not rivals, does than mean the spurs are not good and the NBA does not respect them? Of course not.

I'm glad that you guys seem to agree with Mr. Rondo's comment. Of course this is not a rivalry. A rivalry is never born after a playoff serie only. If that would happen 2-3 years a in row, maybe. But this is not the case.

However, this bball franchise has been so bad for such a long time, that our series against the Celtics in 08 energized not only the fans, but the whole city of Atlanta. This a huge positive that the Hawks fans needed. I can't be mad at a fan who trully believes that this is a rivalry, because for him that would only mean that the Hawks can finally battle against contenders, and even if they can't win it all right now, at least we are far from being the NBA's laughing stock that we were not long ago. Just remember...

Last year, the team had the "We're going to shock the world" mantra. They didn't win over Boston, but going 7 actually was enough to shock the world. I'm not sure what the mantra will be this year. Maybe "Proving we belong" or "Taking care of business" in round one. We're in that awkward area where we should be favored in round 1, but we've never won anything. Then if we make it to round 2, we'll be massive underdogs. So one mantra really doesn't work for the entirety of the playoffs.

As for Rondo's comments being bulletin board fodder, they would be if we played Boston. As in Boston doesn't believe we belong in a series with them. However that is very unlikely to occur. If Boston continues on course they finish 2nd or 3rd. We have to collapse and have 2 teams overtake us to fall to 6th. The truth of our situation is that even if we don't hold on to 4th place we are unlikely to fall below 5th because it would take Miami and Philly both getting very hot at the same time. If things play out as projected in regular season we'd have to make the finals to see Boston in a series.

Using it as generic playoff bulletin board material, does it come into play against Miami? or Philadelphia? or Cleveland? Eh, no. Rondo's opinion was only that we aren't Boston's rival not that we suck or don't belong in the playoffs. Wait for a comment from someone that says we're glad we got Atlanta as a opponent. That's can be construed as disrespect.

^^^I think a mantra like what you said "proving we belong" or "proving people wrong" something along the lines would be great. Maybe "defy all odds" idk something like that.
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.
