Griffen+Thompson+Hawes

Post#1 » by sacking101 » Sat Mar 28, 2009 9:18 pm

Say we get the #1 pick. There is no way we pass on Griffen so can him thompson and hawes play together. We have seen thompson play some three this year but not much. I think both him and Griffen are athletic and versatile enough to make it work. Is there an offense out there that would make playing two 6'10'' guys and a 7'0'' all over 250lbs work. Or are we more likely to trade either thompson or the #1 pick.

Garcia 6'7''
martin 6'7''
JT 6'10''
Griffen 6'10''
Hawes 7'0''

I would be very interested in seeing how that would work. I think it could under the right coach and system.

no!

Thompson can't play the three! The days of big ball are OVER. The rule changes favor a faster game, so Thompson would only add to his foul count and get beat repeatedly.

If we draft Griffin one of them has to be traded.

I would hate to see Thompson go but I cant see us not drafting Griffin if we get the first. This is gonna be an interesting offseason.

Sorry but that can't happen. Jason would not be able to keep up with most athletic small forwards. He is a good player for the position that he currently plays, and switching up his positions would be a bad idea.

If we do get Griffin, I would expect us to trade Jason for a PG or draft pick, although you never know with Petrie. I like Jason a lot, but Griffin has been the number one pick since the begining of the NCAA regular season and you can't turn down someone like that because you already have a young PF. I would have no problem keeping both, but Jason would be the back-up.

Like I've been saying.

Draft Griffin, and trade Thompson for Teague or Jennings.

Makes so much sense it hurts.

Teague dissapointed me. he got killed by maryland and stunk it up in the tourney.

jennings seems raw. i saw he averaged 5 steals a game in one of the euro leagues and hes a puree pg

I don't know, it kind of depends. If Jason can play 5MPG at SF and the rest at the big spots, we might be able to pull it off. But the easier thing would be a trade. I don't know if we would trade somebody that looks to be a very good prospect in Jason for an unproven one. After seeing Conley's improvement, I think something based around him might be interesting.

If we draft a big there will be plenty of time for everyone in a 3 man rotation, and Jason could play some minutes at SF without a problem IMO. I don't know if him at SF with another guy wanting the ball in the post is a good idea however. Like I said earlier in the season, if Jason is playing SF this team needs to utilize the mismatch it creates in the post.

If Jason plays, say 6MPG at SF, the minute breakdown at those spots could look like this.

Center - Spencer - 35, Griffin - 13
PF - Griffin - 22, Jason - 26
SF - Jason - 6

Which would give Jason 32MPG, and Griffin and Spencer 35 each. Is that enough for each? I don't know. And I also don't know how much I want Jason at SF. But more than anything, I don't know if it's a luxury worth having. Don't get me wrong--always having two of them in the game would be great. But I'd much, much rather really be well set at PG for the future if a trade is made available. You can only play 5 guys at the end of the game, so having a great starting 5 is ultimately more important than having really great depth.

The current team needs to be blown up, no question. Its just not working. So, if we draft griffin, it makes sense to trade thompson to get something of high value in return, whether that is another player or another pick.

At this point I'd be willing to trade Martin alongside Thompson and see how high of a draft pick someone would be willing to give us. Using that pick and the houstin pick, we should be able to get a solid prospect at point, and another good player to use as well.
Sometimes you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say....Tyreke Evans.
That just happened.

I would be willing to do a:

Beno Udrich
Jason Thompson
2nd round pick

for

Jerry Stackhouse ( 7mil expiring and can be bought out for 2 mil)
and a our 1st Pick, most likely 18-20th pick in the draft,
you guys can then draft the Johnny Flynn, Ty Lawson, Eric Maynor, Darren Collison's of the world.

I say just use all three at the PF/C spots.

With the INCREASED speed of the game, I think Thompson can have alot of success as a back-up 4/5 type of player.

C: Hawes - 32/Thompson 16
PF: Griffin - 32/Thompson 16
SF: Nocioni - 28/Greene 14/Garcia-4
SG: Martin - 32/Garcia 16
PG: Houston Pick(Collison/Maynor/Mills) -28/Beno 14/Garcia-4

I can handle that kind of rotation.

I worry that, at least, eventually, 32 MPG just won't be enough for Hawes and Grififn. That and, like I said before, I'd rather have really strong starters across the board and decent depth than really superb depth with maybe some just "solid" starters.

A month or so i was on the draft a pg group. the more i see griffin, the more i want him as a king. dudes shooting about 80% for the tourney and when he slamed his head on the backboard and still dunked it i believed we should trade whoever we have to to make room for griffen. a power griffin and finness hawes sounds pretty good

The three can't be on the same team. I really see Griffin's ceiling as a player higher than Thompson's, but I really think Thompson will be a very good pro.

This team is young, waaay young, this is the result of blowing it up and it needs to be given time to develop and added to through the draft, free agency, and maybe a trade or two. You don't blow up a young team because they aren't playing well.

And one thing Thompson has going for him is that he probably has greater defensive potential and of course more size. Griffin will probably be smaller than his PF counterpart most nights, but with his speed, ball handling, and jaw dropping athleticism he could very well give them just as many fits.
