There's Still a Chance

Post#1 » by MAS » Fri Apr 10, 2009 8:39 am

If LA and PHO win their final games and the Leafs lose to Ottawa then the Leafs will be the 5th worst team in the NHL. Meaning, they will be in the lottery and have the last shot at winning the #1 pick. Only the bottom 5 teams have a chance at the #1 seeing that you can only move up 4 spots and down 1. So, who knows... we could still get JT

Kings did their job, Coyotes look to be doing theirs too, but the Leafs....the Leafs blew it. This was probably the only game I've ever cheered for the Ottawa Senators and they couldn't pull through. Say hello to the 7th pick again.

We weren't going to get the 1st pick in the draft. After the top 2 picks (Tavares and Hedman), the draft is a crapshoot. We're still looking at a good player wherever we finish up. The top 7 prospects are likely as follows:

Tavares
Hedman
Svensson
Kane
Schenn
Cowen
Duchene

Then you have guys like Despres, Glennie, Kadri, Schroeder, Kulikov and Kassian on the outside looking in.

No matter how close you think the prospects after 2 are it's always better to be #5 than #7.

How were we going to lose these last games exactly? By telling our 19 year old future franchise player to 'throw' the game? Maybe by telling the rest of our youth to lose on purpose to further gain better draft positioning?

Ron Wilson and Brian Burke aren't going to ask their players to lose.

not games, Crowned... game. Start, Pogge... or Cujo like earlier in the year. Not Gerber who would have something to prove. No you don't ask players to tank games, but you give the young players a chance (i.e Pogge).

Ottawa was absolutly horrible in that game, too focused on giving Heatley his goal. But this was an epic fail on our part

Pogge has gotten completely shell shocked this year in the NHL. I wouldn't be risking his confidence even more. As for Joseph, he has played some games recently. Regardless, who's to say he wouldn't win that last game?

After his last game, I think Pogge knew he wouldn't be seeing any more ice time this year. I would've given Munro a shot if anything...

I dunno crowned, there are ways of "tanking" without actually tanking, it just seems the leafs have made no effort to do so

I dislike the NHL's lottery system, where you can only move up a maximum of 4 spots meaning you need to be in the bottom 5 to have a chance to win the lottery. This just encourages more tanking and they should do something like the NBA where all non-playoff teams should have at least a chance to win the lottery.
