Series Thread: Jays vs. Indians, May 4-5
A pretty odd series here...the Jays play a night/day two-gamer against the Indians before jetting out to the West Coast for two against the Angels. These games against Cleveland could be high-scoring affairs, as the Jays send out a newly-minted starter in Tallet and a guy making his ML debut in Cecil against a pair of starters who thus far can do no right.
May 4 - 7:00 EST start, Sportsnet
Indians win, 9-7. W - Betancourt (1-1), L - Camp (0-1). Josh Barfield, 2-2, 1 RBI and 2 runs scored off the bench.
May 5 - 12:30 EST start, Sportsnet
Jays win, 10-6. W - Wolfe (1-0), L - Chulk (0-1). Adam Lind, 3-4, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 2 runs scored.

Schadenfreude, I would be pissed off because you deleted my thread, but the Jays are 18-9, so I'm in a good mood.

Heh, I didn't intend to delete it...I tried to merge them, a skill I've never mastered, and now I can't figure out what happened to it. That said, o'er the last year a won series means the person that made the last one continues to make them until we lose (which is why we forced poor Sensi to make them for the first month), so if we split the two-gamer, feel free to take up the reins.

**** your asterisk.

No worries Schadenfreude, I just wanted an explaination of why mine was deleted. Your cover page was better than mine anyways.
I can't wait to watch Cecil pitch, hopefully he holds up the fort. Tallet used to play for Cleveland, he should have extra motivation when he faces his old team who abandoned him.

MjJunkYard, you definitely have dibs for the next series.. go for it and bring us more series wins
that said, i think we should clear up what happens in a tied series... i think the original author should still continue even in a tie since it wasn't really a series lost.. but that's just my opinion.

A win tomorrow puts us 10 games over .500. That looks really nice. I'm still admiring and often staring at the standings, seeing us 1st in the AL. Oh so nice.

Yes who would of ever thought we would lead the majors in so many categories. It's still early, but it's nice to see us get this start.
Richmond has impressed me the most from our pitching staff. 4-0 with an ERA of 2.67
That's a better record than the Doc. Nice!
Let's see how we do with the Indians the next 2 games. Both games are winnable.

i was bored and just looking at the Jays home-grown players and saw McGowan and someone else were 'Supplemental Picks'....what exactly is a Supplemental pick? I know what a Rule 5 draft pick is but not this, is it picks you get when your Type A/B players sign elsewhere?

The Stache will not stand for two straight losses and will get revenge on the Indians

A suplimental pick is compensation for losing a HIGH PRICED free agent. (I.E. The Blue Jays lost A.J. Burnett, so they will be given one suplimental pick in the 2009 draft).
Suplimental draft picks are given after round 1 is complete in the draft. Say the Washington Nationals had the worst record in baseball last year and lost three Type 1 free agents (high priced), they would get 3 additional draft picks after round one is complete. The next worst team in baseball Kansas City didn't lose any Type 1 Free Agents, so they don't get any suplimental pick. Next is the team with the third worst record in 2008 and so on...................Suplimental picks are given in order of a teams record; with the worst teams being able to use their suplimental picks first.
I hope that helps.

Pretty much, with one catch: it's not necessarily highly-priced guys, but players rated highly by the Elias system. Thus, you get some oddities, like the Jays getting a sup. pick (our starter Tuesday night, coincidentally) in exchange for Justin Speier (who was acquired for the guy we faced two days ago...fun little circle, that). Or the Mets picking up a pick when 41 year old Roberto Hernandez flew the coop, only to bomb and retire a year later. When you're talking about relievers, middle infielders, and catchers, the compensation scheme gets really wacky owing to relative player values, or often sheer luck in the case of relievers, which is why they've looked at the sign-and-trade model.

Heh, corrected. Give me a break, I'm lucky if I know what month it is. Or who I am.

yep those explanations were awesome and cleared it up.
and Schad, you have some leeway but if the Jays have any chance to maintain this star, we gotta play on the ride days

Cecil's only good start so far this year was his last one. Hopefully he can keep it up, and hopefully the mystery mustache can just forget that Royals game all together.

Re: Series Thread: Jays vs. Indians, May 4-5
One other oddity to throw out there with the comp. picks. The Yankees, of course, signed three type A free agents: Teixeira, Sabathia, and Burnett. They give up their first rounder for Teixeira, second for Sabathia, and third for Burnett, with all three teams also receiving supplemental round picks. However, because the Yankees didn't sign Gerrit Cole last year (their first round pick), they still get a first rounder, as that one can't be conveyed to another team.

Schad for MVP. Nice write ups the last two series with the pitching match-ups.
I don't have a great feeling about these next two games against the tribe, but the Jays keep surprising me. 20-9 would be an incredible start.

I just hope whoever's behind the plate calls a better game than Barajas did last time... "0-2, let's throw a fastball on the inner half of the plate". Tallet doesn't have great stuff but he does have enough stuff to get guys out. Unfortunately, the 89MPH fastball alone isn't enough.

Hope Tallet redeems himself. We need to sweep the Tribe ... they are just not a good team this year.
