This plan focuses on keeping the primary pieces together and trying to make further strides in 09-10.
Trade no.1 (between Atlanta & Chicago)
Hawks get:
Kirk Hinrich
Anthony Roberson
Bulls get:
Mo Evans
Acie Law V
Speedy Claxton
WHY IT COULD WORK FOR THE HAWKS:
Hinrich played great ball in the series against the Celtics. He would be a great replacement for Bibby (who I don't think will come back for the price tag Atlanta will offer). Hinrich plays quality D and can shoot the ball. He and JJ would make a potent backcourt.
WHY IT COULD WORK FOR THE BULLS:
Hinrich makes too much money to be a backup for Rose. This deal helps the Bulls financially and opens up extra cap space for 2010 (maybe they could lure Wade from Miami).
Trade no.2 (between Atlanta & New Orleans)
Hawks get:
#21 pick
Hornets get:
#49 pick
WHY IT COULD WORK FOR THE HAWKS:
They get another 1st rounder to add depth.
WHY IT COULD WORK FOR THE HORNETS:
They get out from under the obligation to sign a 1st round pick to a three-year deal while still getting a player in the 2nd round of the draft.
DRAFT:
#19 pick - Jeff Teague
why?
He's a dynamo of a guard and would add a spark to the bench.
#21 pick - DeJuan Blair
why?
Blair is a tough, rugged big man who can step in and help the frontcourt right away.
FREE AGENTS:
Re-sign Marvin Williams - 5 years/42 million
why?
This deal is comparable to what Prince, Wallace, and other SF's have signed for. I think Marvin would accept it.
Re-sign Flip Murray - 2 years/4 million (with a player option for next season)
why?
In such a down market, I don't see a team offering Flip a big contract. This deal gives him a slight pay raise while allowing him to test the market again next summer.
Sign Mikki Moore - 1 year/league minimum
why?
He adds solid, veteran depth to the 5 spot.
Sign Matt Barnes - 1 year/league minimum
why?
Barnes add quality veteran depth to the perimeter.
NEW HAWKS ROSTER:
PG-Kirk Hinrich/Jeff Teague
SG-Joe Johnson/Flip Murray/Anthony Roberson
SF-Marvin Williams/Matt Barnes
PF-Josh Smith/DeJuan Blair
C-Al Horford/Mikki Moore/Randolph Morris

The Hornets sold their draft pick last year for $3 mill. That trade proposal is most definitely plausible.

pja- its only plausible if you think the other 18 teams that pick in front of the hawks in the second round would turn down that trade.

Re: "Keep Them Together" Hawks Off-Season Plan...
yeah, the 2nd for a 1st is a bit much. Would it be more plausible if we tossed in a future 2nd as well? I'd prefer one in '11...
Not sure about the Hinrich deal either. If CHI wanted to trade Hinrich for expirings and a role player, then I'd think they could have done that by now. I do like Hinrich though... Maybe pitch Blair instead of either Mo or Acie?
I like Blair, but I think I'd groan if we called his name on d-day. Another PF?!?
Do we get nothing for Chills, Bibby, and Zaza? I can understand if they left, but I'd prefer Zaza to Mikki and, obviously, something over nothing for Bibby and Chills...

atlfan,
it's still not a certainty that childress would even come back to the NBA. at this point its a bonus if we get anything for him. you might as well think of him as a UFA.
as for the rest, the trade is very much plausible, and i would even venture out as to say it has a very good possibility of happening (which is very rare around realgm). i doubt that new orleans would do that trade especially since the draft pick is pretty low and is pretty reasonable for a role player. i agree with your signings also, with the exception of mikki moore. even though i see that he's only for the vet minimum, he is a serious downgrade to zaza pachulia. i think that this is a case where you have to keep him just to keep what little bench you have. you could still pick him up, but not at the expense of pachulia. with the second round we had i would look at henk norel, a euro bigman that has the potential to be a good rebounding. or alande aminu, the power forward from georgia tech.
in short the team should look like:
hinrich/ teague (maynor if he's available)
johnson/ murray/ roberson
williams/ barnes
smith/ aminu
horford/ pachulia/ morris

UFAs who sign over the MLE are still typically traded via SNTs.lunarblues wrote:atlfan,

Either way, from what I've seen, Chills is looking to come back. He likes Greece well enough, but he's homesick and there's a 10 hour time difference between him and his mom. Can't blame the kid for wanting to come home. The problem? I don't think Chills wants to play here due to how the negotiations went, and Sund is way too shrewd to allow Chills to simply pick where he wants to go without getting compensation back. Sund is in a position where he can basically black ball Chills out of the NBA unless Chills either swallows his pride and signs the his QO or another team can put together an offer that both works with Chills' BYC issues and Sund is willing to accept. I don't think we've heard the end of this situation and it wouldn't surprise me if this gets pretty ugly before it's over.

This is a very plausible trade and quite frankly gave me a chill imagining the possibility but at that point you have to get past the too good to be true nature and question the New Orleans side of the deal. They very much may be looking to sell their pick this year but I think they may want to package it with one of their smaller non-rookie scale contracts such as Posey or Peterson and I doubt we have the cap to absorb either.

I liked most of it. Not sure on the New Orleans trade, cash would seal the deal, but I can't see us offering cash. I believe we can get a 1st rounder this year in some way or form whether it be 2 2nds, some cash, or a future 1st with high protection.
The only part I didn't like was the signing of Mikki Moore. It seems apparent watching his last two stops that he doesn't have very much left in the tank. Have you ran the final salary numbers on your finished roster? I'm curious what the total is and if it has any room to court a different C in the deal.
BTW, I like the counter suggestion of Aminu in the 2nd round if we don't trade the pick. He could be an athletic backup big with enough length to matter. I would love if he fell through the cracks to unsigned FA.
The other problem I see is the possible abandonment of Mario West and Othello Hunter (you don't list all 15 roster spots or 14 if you leave one open). I think both can be solid backups with additional development and opportunity. If Mario works this summer on some consistent offense, even if it is as specialized as a corner 3 then I think he'd provide enough on D to get some solid minutes. If he doesn't develop some form of offense then I have no problem parting ways. Othello could be our cheap PF off the bench if he's developed enough to get some minutes. I know Solomon never did, but I think it might be too early to part with Othello. Hopefully those 2 minimum salaries fit in the overall roster plans.
