Defensive Swingman
What we really need is a player who can defend the 2/3 spot. Gordon is a good defender but at 6"3 he is too short as players can just shoot over him. And Al is not a good defender at that spot. It seems like the NBA is loaded and dominated by the 2/3 spot; Kobe Bryant, Paul Pierce, Manu Ginobili, T-mac, Brandon Roy, Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James, Rudy Gay, Kevin Durant, etc, etc. These players have run wild on us.
I'm not saying we should necessarily get rid of Al, I think he'd be great coming off the bench, but he is only effective on the offensive side of the court. I think Griffin can be a decent defender despite what people are saying about his defense in college. Gordon's defense like I said earlier is solid and Baron, although not a great defender, at least causes turnovers with his steals. And from what I've seen from DJ he is a capable shot blocker.
So this is the one move I REALLY want to see from the Clippers this off-season. It really doesn't matter to me what we do with our loaded front court. Its better to have too much talent than not enough. But as of right now we don't have too much talent at the 2/3 spot.

I'm hoping for either a Kaman/Prince or Randolph/Jefferson deal to sure up the position. The Clips can get rid of Al and let Novak come off the bench at that position if they acquire a decent starter.

Re: Defensive Swingman
Good thread bbsee1, as i'm exactly with you.
We'll need a solid defender at the 3 spot, next to Gordon and Griffin, that will guard the opposing teams best perimeter scorer, while also hitting his open jumpers, which should be there because of those two guys i mentioned.
A guy i could really see being helpful would be Ime Udoka from San Antonio.
He couldn't really show his game there, but he was a really solid defender in Portland and also hit about 40% of his three pointers back then.
Now he's a free agent and i think something like 2 years and about $4 mil should do the trick to sign him.

Matt Barnes is a unrestricted free agent. He's played here before and has played with Baron. He's a very willing defender and a pretty good spot up shooter. He could probably had on the cheap as well.

Re: Defensive Swingman
The player the Clips really need is hometown boy DeMar DeRozan.
The Clippers should make two trades to move down in this draft and SAVE lots of money:
(1) Trade Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, and Blake Griffin (#1) to Memphis for OJ Mayo and the #2 Pick.
(2) Trade Zach Randolph, Al Thornton, and Rickey Rubio (#2) to Golden State for Anthony Randolph, Jamal Crawford, Ronny Turiaf, and DeMar DeRozan (#7).
The first trade saves the Clips 82 million not including luxury tax (if applicable).
The second trade saves the Clips 8.5 million.
The Clippers save 90 million dollars and field a team like this:
PG - OJ Mayo (his team)
SG - Jamal Crawford (good fit, expires in 2 yrs)
C - Chris Kaman (turn him lose)
PF - Marcus Camby (defensive role-player)
SF - Anthony Randolph (Mayo's Pippen down the road)
G - Mardy Collins
G - Mike Taylor (instant offense)
C - Ronny Turiaf (big man depth)
F - DeAndre Jordan (quality minutes behind 3 vets)
F - DeMar DeRozan (bring along as slow or fast as neccesary)

Re: Defensive Swingman
We give up too much in the trade to get Mayo, plus DeRozan will be gone at 5 or 6
If the Clippers win the championship next year I'm getting banned from RealGM

Re: Defensive Swingman
Washington (5) will go big with Jordan Hill.
Minnesota (6) will steal Harden, who will slip.
DeRozan will be there at seven.
Davis, Griffin, and Gordon seems like ALOT for Mayo and #2 but it's really not if you look at the trade as an opportunity to dump Baron's contract for no salary in return.
I look at the trade as Gordon for Mayo (slight upgrade), Griffin for Rubio (definite downgrade), and Davis for peanuts (definite financial upgrade) ...
Clippers win this trade if Mayo can prove to be better than Gordon (not a given).

the knicks 8th pick and wilson chandler(a good young swingman with very good potential on both sides of the ball)
for the 1st pick and baron( or not, but you'd get cap room)
for the 1st pick and baron( or not, but you'd get cap room)

We're not trading that #1 pick and we surely won't downgrade from building our team around Eric Gordon/Blake Griffin to OJ Mayo/DeMar DeRozan, even if it would save us $8.5 mil.
BTW: There's a huge Clippers trade thread pinned on top of this forum. This one's about a defensive swingmen which would fit next to Gordon and Griffin...

Where do you guys come up with some of these trades.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

Earl Clark people. Trade Kaman for something plus a 8-10 pick and grab Clark. That's all we need. Or Thornton straight up.

The guy we need is Nic Batum. He is that defensive swingman who can guard the 2/3 and he is very young, so he can grow with Gordon and Griffin.

First off where is it written that we need to save any money? We are one of the most financially stable teams in The NBA and it will be pretty evident in a couple of years to come. We will be able to sign players in the future for the simple fact we will be able to afford them. Second, horrible, horrible trade. Lastly Gordon will be a better player than Mayo by far.

If Memphis wants the #1 pick for Blake Griffin they would need to send the #2 pick and OJ Mayo to get it done. Very unlikely to happen. This trade doesn't work under the salary cap anyway, where are some Memphis contracts to balance Baron's contract?

Re: Defensive Swingman
They are not needed because they are so far under the cap they can absorb any of our contracts. The same way we obsorbed Camby's contract.jgustav1 wrote:ALL HAIL wrote:The player the Clips really need is hometown boy DeMar DeRozan.

Tradechecker doesn't allow a Mayo for Davis trade, maybe it would work after July 1.
