I know he has zero coaching experience, but listening to him talk basketball everyday throughout the playoffs convinced me has a great basketball mind, and he seems really level-headed.

Thoughts?

I like it. I don't mind that he is a new coach. He is a big name which will help and he really knows the PG position and was a solid defender. Kahn probably knows him as a player from his Indiana days. I don't see much else out there really that is substantialy a better option.

Again, why not someone with SOME coaching experience under a great coach? I'm going to just throw out one of the Spurs coaches:

Brett Brown: Younger guy with 5 seasons under Pop as assistant coach and Director of Player Development for the Spurs. 8 seasons as a coach with the Australian national team and experience as a head coach overseas.

I'm not even necessarily advocating this guy, just saying he'd be a better choice than a crappy retread or some random former player with no coaching experience.

Guys...there's an option we haven't considered here...what about Randy Wittman?

I agree it would be nice to get someone with at least some experience, but I don't think of Mark Jackson as merely 'some random former player'. He really seems to have a great basketball head on his shoulders and the young pups would probably find it easy to relate with him. I agreed with almost everything that came out of his mouth during the hours and hours of the playoffs that I watched, which is rare. I think I like the idea of at least giving him an interview.

Lobo, are you sure that you weren't confusing Jackson's voice with van Gundy's?

I'm not a big fan of the no experience coach, but I guess he would at least be better than Fratello.

Mark Jackson is that balding guy that cracks all the hilarious jokes, right?

I don't know, I just have a good feeling about him, despite his inexperience. I was actually thinking to myself: 'hmm, this guy should be coaching.....' and: 'hmm...who wants to order some pizza?'

I like it. I will actually miss his commentary though. He's hilarious. Plus getting him will give us some support from the media. Jackson is liked amongst many.

Cassell and Randy Wittman, the former head coach of Cleveland and Minnesota, were hired as assistants to new Wizards coach Flip Saunders.

Oh, I'm sure that when it comes to pizza, Mark Jackson

gets...

it... :burger:

done.

Plus, we know he looks good in a suit, and his post-game analysis will be insightful.

I think that Mark Jackson may not be a bad coach. That said, when he was in the running to coach the Knicks, he was on record saying that he feels that Stephon Marbury is a great player and with his (Jackson's) help, he'd be an allstar. As a Knicks (and Wolves) fan, I can say with complete confidence that if Jackson were coaching the team it would have been an unmitigated disaster.

Jackson is also on record saying that Marcus Williams is the next great point guard in this league. Williams is out of the league.

So, in terms of his apparent basketball knowledge he's probably fine, but when you really listen to his opinions of some pretty dubious players, you really should question his ability to make good coaching and team management decisions. IMO he should not be hired without proving that he actually does have the ability to lead a team in the right direction. He should be an assistant coach for a few years to prove that he's not full of it. Because right now I think he's full of it. Good commentator. Full of it as a talent and team evaluator.

I say no to him as head coach. This team is far too fragile to be taking that kind of risk. If they're going to transition into a team that is not a league joke (and it has been, seriously), they need to bring in a coach with credibility and really be sure to make all the right decisions.
Cheers, Dr. SithMirth

I'm surprised no one has brought this point up. ITS CHARLEY FREAKIN WALTERS who reported it! That combined with the fact the article says "a little birdie" says it makes it even more doubtful.
