Breaking News: RDV unwilling to spend for new PF

Post#1 » by Cigamodnalro » Wed Jul 1, 2009 6:37 am

http://www.floridatoday.com/article/200 ... rd+big+man

With Vince Carter's $16.3 million salary taking the Orlando Magic deep into luxury tax territory, the likelihood is that standout forward Hedo Turkoglu is long gone and any top-shelf help at power forward will be out of reach.

Drew Gooden, anyone? Or how about other Magic castoffs from years past such as Juwan Howard or Steven Hunter? Or possibly even Chris Wilcox, Shelden Williams, Joe Smith or Rasho Nesterovic.

Or could Orlando reunite with Tony Battie, traded last week in the Carter deal -- if his contract is bought out by the New Jersey Nets?

In other words, any hopes Magic fans had of seeing a major upgrade at power forward in the form of Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess or Brandon Bass likely are gone because Orlando almost certainly won't have the financial wherewithal to attract such players.

We were only willing to pay luxury tax premiums for Hedo, it seems. We have the MLE, but it doesn't sound like management is willing to spend it on a big.

Unless this is a smokescreen, this really *is* tragic. :(

We're sooo close.

1. denton has become that guy who would bend any shred of fact to make the magic organization look bad.
2. it is possible that the magic is not going after a decent pf after securing 4 of the five starting spots with good/very good players.
3. then again, there is nothing set in stone that dictates this.
only 10 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists shy of yet another triple double - anonymous

The Magic have also responded to the Lakers physicality by getting *smaller* this offseason. We have the opportunity to enter 2010 as favorites for the 'ship, and we're willing to throw that away to avoid going further into luxury territory.

The Vince trade is a huge failure, and I'd venture to say that we've gotten worse this summer if Otis fails to pick up help up front. I think everyone assumed the Carter deal was part of a two-pronged strategy that involved either Hedo or a quality big.

Wtf, they cant be serious?

We might as well just quit.

SMMFH, We're downgraded from last year. While all the other teams got better.

If he's got that attitude, we'll never see a championship.

If simply swaping out Hedo and Carter was the extent of the offseason plan, then the trade was a mistake. I like Carter a lot, but last year's small ball lineup is better than what we currently have.

I guess the Hedo haters are about to get their wish and see what we look like without him. I hope they are right even if I doubt it.

I'm a Carter fan and I agree with this. I thought when Carter was traded here if they didn't keep Hedo they would at least shell out the MLE for a big like Sheed to help Dwight up front. If this story is true then this sucks.
