Did we make a qualifying offer to Marvin Williams?

Post#1 » by joeshmoe » Wed Jul 1, 2009 12:51 pm

I have read repeatedly in the AJC that Marvin Williams would become a restricted free agent today. So, I assume we made him a qualifying offer. But I have never heard specifically that we made him the qualifying offer of $7.6 million (or something like that). Could someone clarify this for me?

I'm not sure Marvin would demand that kind of money as an unrestricted free agent.

Twitter (if you can count that seriously) says we gave the qo to mario, solo, chill, and marvin.

I'd be a little surprised if the Hawks really offered Jones the QO. I'd think he would easily accept the 1 year 1.1 million dollar guaranteed contract. I'd EASILY rather have an undrafted free agent like John Bryant. There are several other UDFA's I'd rather have in fact.

marvin's QO is a 1 year $7,355,166 contract. Before July 23rd the Hawks could withdraw the QO if they wanted to.

Personally I don't see any teams with caproom going after Marvin so I expect him to end up taking the QO. One "dirty pool" way of getting marvin to sign a longer term contract with the Hawks woudl be to withdraw the QO after all the other teams have already spent their caproom leaving the hawks as the only team that could exceed the MLE to give him a contract. But this would be ridiculously aggressive and I can't imagine it would actually happen.

If we withdrew the QO now, would anyone be interested in him for $8 million plus? The only team I could imagine that has cap space is Oklahoma City. Or if he remained a restricted free agent, would we match a $8 million a year contract were he offered that?

I think we should withdraw the qualifying offer, and try to lock him up at closer to his market value. I think we could get him for about $6 million a year. I could imagine a team offering him the MLE, but not more than that. Of course, it might be risky.

To me the question is whether you would rather have marvin be an UFA this offseason or next offseason. I really don't want any part of trying to keep Marvin next offseason when so many teams are trying to clear caproom. I think after those teams strike out on guys like Lebron, Bosh, Amare, and Joe that a young guy with potential like Marvin will get too much money because teams do not want to strike out completely.

I agree with you 100%. I think teams will be somewhat cautious this offseason because everyone seems to be making preparations for the following year. Someone will throw money his way next year that would make it to much for the Hawks to want to match.

Actually- just got confirmation that the hawks did indeed put forth a QO for Solomon Jones.

Has Solomon given us anything of value at this point? What was his high moment last year?

He should take that offer.
