Hawks can find bargains in free agency

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Mon Jul 6, 2009 12:24 am

Sekou Smith likes: Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, Brandon Bass, Chris Wilcox, and Channing Frye. Link

Gerald Green was one of my bargain players last year for Dallas and he was very disappointing. When Rick Carlisle gave him a chance Gerald never cared about the best interest of the team. What Gerald did care about was trying to entertain.

Brandon Bass will most likely receive the MLE and most, if not all of it.

Channing Frye to me would be a complete waste of time on our part.

Two of my bargain players would be Rashad McCants and Ike Diogu.

I like Channing Frye. He's not a big post up player. But he is a great mismatch on offense with his ability to hit the outside shot. And he rebouds pretty well too. You would just never know it because he is stuck behind Aldridge, Prizzbila, and Oden.

I have watched Portland a lot, and when he gets minutes, which is rarely, he performs quite well. I think he could be a steal, his stock is low because he has been on a team that has no room for him.

The Theo Ratliff recommendation came out of left field. He hasn't stayed healthy since he was on the Hawks like 6 years ago.

I wouldn't be totally opposed to Frye...but only as the 4th big man. He is a pretty terrible rebounder for his size. I also read somewhere that he was close to signing with Phoenix.

Diogu is interesting.

Saw the list the other day and didn't like it.
Theo Ratliff - decent risk at vet minimum (not a penny more)
Chris Wilcox and Brandon Bass - Not sure they'll be real bargains once the bidding starts
Gerald Green - poor handle and has been a miss as a breakout player the last 2 stops in his NBA journey
Channing Frye - Soft. Peaked as a rookie.

Diogu is a real possibility. He's been good when he's gotten minutes.
McCants is a guy I want no part of. If Bibby is resigned I'm not sure I want to spend anymore in the backcourt. I'd rather focus on adding up front and maybe a wing.

I still like Leon Powe because I have faith for him to come back from injury and saw what he was doing before the injury, but if we can get Diogu less expensively I'd go that route.

I'd also like us to fill a roster slot with a undrafted free agent big with some size and rebounding background for future development. Having that pay off is the real bargain shopping.

I would be ok with Ratliff as a 10-15 min a night guy, at the veteran minimum.
For a wing player, what about James 'Flight' White? He's been in the d-league the last couple of years, is solid on defense, and learning how to do more than dunk on offense.

Unless we are not keeping Marvin I see no need to be targeting anymore SG/SF. I only want us to bring in PF/C. I think Frye would be ideal because he stock is low and he would be better than anything we have on our bench at the PF, and he also could log in some spot min at C. In addition to Frye I would like us to bring Back ZaZA and get Rasho Nesterovic.. Remember we are only trying to improve our bench. This does it.
Keep Mike Bibby

It would be a surprise if Sund doesn't make an offer to Petro, who can come for the minimum or a portion of the BAE, and was drafted by him.

Sort of irritates me that the Hawks gave the QO to Solomon Jones. I'd much rather that money go to Swift, Petro, John Bryant, or Aaron Gray

I'm hopeful that the QO gets pulled from the table on Solomon, but if I'm him I sign it the first second I can.
