Sources close to Rockets center Yao Ming tell Local 2 this afternoon he will announce he is having major surgery on his left foot in the next few days, and that the procedure will keep him out of the upcoming Rockets season.

Yao has been sidelined since May 8 when it was discovered he suffered a hairline fracture in the top of the foot following a playoff game against the Lakers.

He has missed parts of the previous three seasons due to foot or leg injuries.

Feigan may not have good understanding about the contractual stuff but at least he has connection to the rockets and the people who know it better. So the stuff he wrote has some substance.

Yes luxury threshold will not be affected whether or not Yao plays. Yao and Tmac's salaries will be paid by insurance but their salaries remain in the cap & luxury threshold calculation.
But the medical exception i mentioned above allow the Rockets to go out and sign another player up to MLE salary if rockets chose to. This 2nd MLE salary will be added to the total salary. Rockets owner Les has to decide if he want to use this medical exception to sign another players and pay more luxury tax this year. As rockets will be taxed, this special MLE will cost double to Rockets.

John Walls is going to be a top 3 pick. So Rockets have to be near the bottom of the western conference to have to chance. Anyway, the way the picks are decided by luck, tanking does not necessary get you the pick you want. See past 2 season where both lowest winning team lost out in the lottery.

These rockets are fighters. they don't tank. In fact, they may surprise a few if everyone were in sync in Adelman's offense and play your usual defense. As much as I would like the Rockets to have a good lottery pick, I see them getting that 8th playoff spot.
