Spurs out in front for McDyess

The Spurs have emerged as the frontrunner in the chase to land free-agent forward Antonio McDyess.

According to a league executive with knowledge of the negotiations, the Spurs have offered McDyess a three-year deal starting at the full mid-level exception, with the third year partially guaranteed.

It has been widely speculated that McDyess, 34, will play only two more years. If the Spurs' rumored bid is true, the Spurs have essentially sweetened their best two-year offer by guaranteeing McDyess a bit of money for retirement in 2011-12.

The 6-foot-9 McDyess emerged as the Spurs' top target after Rasheed Wallace -- McDyess' former teammate in Detroit -- agreed to terms with Boston earlier this week. He is also being pursued by Cleveland and Orlando.

UPDATE (OF SORTS): Some commenters seem to be worried about McDyess' age, and it's a fair point. One thing I'd point out: He's all of 10 days older than Wallace, the guy the Spurs were chasing up until two days ago. And though he's a year older than Tim Duncan, McDyess has played in 110 fewer games.

I found the link in Hoopsworld but i thought it was still worthy to post it.

Pistons fan here - I hope he signs with you guys. I love McDyess, and it'd hurt to see him in a different uniform than a Pistons one, but I also want him to play for a contender, not a rebuilding team like Detroit.

Sheed might've been a better fit for you guys, but McDyess is the better player right now in my opinion. He's a goddamn warrior and whatever his age, he'll play harder than the 25 year olds on your team.

I knew the BBD rumours were a smoke screen. Bring in Dice. Great news! Let's hope he signs asap.

If we land McDyess, this would have to be up there with the all-time great Spurs offseasons.

Antonio McDyess has agreed to join the San Antonio Spurs. Word is he'll sign a three-year deal with two years fully guaranteed and a third non-guaranteed year. Link

Yahoo just updated the McDyess signing again and said it is a two-year deal at the mid-level exception for $11.7 million. It is believed there is a partial guarantee on a third season.

Gz for landing Dice, he is a fantastic player and a great character. A classy guy. He will make San Antonio a lot better and you guys should be happy about it. For ppl who think he is old and done he had his first 20/20 game last year and was Detroit's 2nd best player after Prince.

Good luck, guys. Please win McDyess a ring. I will be cheering for the Spurs.

PS. I disagree with the previous poster that said Sheed would be a better fit. Dice is pure class. He hustles, plays defense and will give every ounce of effort he has for the team. Sheed may have more talent (according to some) but McDyess actually applies himself on a night-in, night-out basis.

Thanks for the congrats, guys (I've always considered the Pistons as our brothers-in-arms over in the East). Hopefully we get that ring (and take down LA along the way)!

Another Piston-ite here.

Please make sure that you guys get this man his ring. Dude is the ultimate warrior and the conssumate professional. You guys will enjoy every single second of his time in San Antonio. Dude will spill blood and guts on every play. Nobody and I mean nobody burns with a deeper desire to win than Antonio McDyess.

Congratulations Spurs fans, you guys got a true free agent prize here.

Take care of him guys. Here's to SAS taking down the Lakers :D

Yet another Pistons fan here, dating back to the Bing/Lanier days.......'Dyess is one of my all-time favotire Pistons for the reasons others have echoed -- plays with all his heart no matter what the circumstances.......Sheed, on the other hand, can play great - if things are going smoothly.......when things get shakey, Sheed does not step up - he pouts, and becomes immature. Overall Sheed does have more talent, imho.......but if something happens (like KG's injury) do not expect him to step up.

Dyess, on the other hand, will give everything he has. When Sheed tanked the season last year, Antonio played his best ball in a Pistons uni.

You guys can expect the same. The Pistons frontcourt (which now consists of Kwame, Maxiell and Charlie V -- LOL!) will lead them to the lottery (unless a miracle trade brings in a good center) -- so next season I will definitely be cheering for the Spurs! Go get Dyess a ring!!
