Mid-Season Report Cards

Post#1 » by s e n s i » Mon Jul 13, 2009 1:03 am

Scutaro - A. Easily our best baserunner, using a combination of smarts and aggressiveness. Gets on by any means necessary. Stellar, GG-esque defense from a position that was a question mark prior to this season. .384 OBP leads the team (actually Bautista does, but in 200+ less at-bats)

Hill - A. Leads team with 20 jacks and 60 RBIs. Most offensive output by a Jays 2nd baseman since the days of Robbie Alomar. Also providing more than stellar defense.

Lind - A-. 19 HRs, 59 RBIs, 15th in the AL in avg.

Rolen - A-. Gunning for his 8th GG. Not hitting homeruns, but hitting period. .324 avg which is 3rd in the AL will tell you that.

Overbay - C+.

Wells - F.

Rios - C- (generous). Some lackadaisical gaffs on the basepaths and nonchalant demeanor in the outfield has him at a 60% grading at the moment. Could be a sh*tload better.

Barajas - C+. He must be somewhere in the ranks of leading the league in infield/foul flies.

Millar - C. Getting old.

Bautista - B-. Provides some surprisingly good defense and an decent bat. Strikes out looking way too often though.

McDonald - A. For hitting that jack in NY.

Chavez - C. Poor hitter, slow. Has a helluva arm though.

Halladay - A+. 'Nuff said. Best pitcher in baseball. Groin injury may have somewhat derailed his Cy Young chances, but he's nails so he'll be in the running until the seasons end regardless.

Romero - A. I mean really, who would have thought he'd be in the running for AL ROY mid-season?

Tallet - B-. Had some good starts, but has since been inconsistent.

Cecil - C. Some OK outings, some gems, and some absolutely atrocious ones.

Richmond - B. Surprisingly reliable. Always pegged as the 5th man in the rotation, thus has to do all the bitch work, but he's done it pretty decently. Not bad for a guy who was scraping sh*t off boats not too long ago.

Frasor/Downs - A. Both guys have been lights out this season.

Rest of the bullpen - C+. They sure aren't terrible, but have blown their fair share of games. You never know what you're gonna get with League, Carlson, or Camp. Losing Tallet to the rotation kinda hurt too. They're not all that bad though, as much as we dog on them for it.

These are mine of course, some may not agree. The team has been pretty good, we've just been unfortunate with injuries plus untimely hitting which always seems to be the case. So yeah, share yours.

Scutaro- A. Huge surprise. Was one of the best SS's in the AL during the first half of the season.

Hill- A. Great bounce back from his concussion. He did better than anybody could have expected, and was probably the best at his position (outside of maybe Zobrist) in the league.

Lind- A. Even I didn't think he was capable of breaking out like this. I only hope he can keep it up in the 2nd half. He's basically the main reason this offense has improved from where it was last year.

Rolen- A. He's hitting much better than last year, and is still playing great defense. He's also stayed healthy, which is key.

Overbay- B. He's done his job well as one of the best defensive 1B in the game. He's also hit righties very well, too. If only they could find an actual platoon partner for him...

Bautista- B. A good defensive player that can hit lefties well and take walks. He's a good platoon option...I just hope to never see him start for this team, he can't hit righties whatsoever. JP made a good trade to give up Diaz for him, though.

Barajas- C. As good a season as anybody could expect from him...he's playing up to his career averages.

Chavez- C. He's thrown out a lot of baserunners. He's what a backup catcher should be (ie. not Jason Phillips).

Millar- C. He's been bad, but nobody expected him to be good. Meh.

Rios- C-. He can do much better than this, but he will. Defensively, he's still solid. Really has to stop with the mental errors.

Wells- D. Defensively, he's horrible in CF now, but it's not really his fault...he should be moved to one of the corners. He's also underachieved great offensively, but is slowly turning it around, and I have no doubt that his numbers will be there at the end of the year.

McDonald- NA. He doesn't play many games, and he really shouldn't either.

Halladay- A+. He was in the middle of his best season ever before he got hurt (he still actually is if you look at his peripherals). I only hope they keep him.

Romero- A. This is a guy that's had mediocre minor league numbers ever since he was drafted. For him to be doing this...well it's pretty ridiculous. He is an example of the power of confidence and mental toughness (somebody tell Chris Bosh about this power).

Tallet- B. For a career reliever thrown into a starter's role, he's done better than anybody could have expected. Without him eating innings, I'm not sure where we would be.

Richmond- B. He's pitched as well as could have been expected. He could be a great pitcher if he could ever figure out a way to get lefties out, but it might be too late for that in his career.

Cecil- C. For a rookie he's done fine. He'll get it at some point...I have a feeling that his confidence has been hurt ever since that Boston outing.

Downs- A. One of the best relievers in baseball when healthy.

Frasor- A. Despite fading a bit over the last month, he's proven to be a dependable reliever for a team that was desperately in need of one after BJ Ryan lost all of his skill.

Dirk- A. His name is Dirk and he wears a pink backpack as he walks to the bullpen before games.

League- B. League's peripherals are ridiculous and better than I've ever seen them before. Going out for 2nd innings have killed him, but I think it will all eventually click at some point.

Camp- B. He's done better than I expected he would. He's really helped this team as the long reliever with Tallet's move to the rotation.

Carlson- C. He's done alright, but not great. You had to figure that he'd decline, though, he was a virtual no-name before last season.

Oh, and David Purcey failed in his big opportunity to succeed in the majors. He has great stuff, and had a real chance. It's too bad.

I'm going to upgrade Scooter to a A as well. He's just a joy to watch and always seems like he's having a blast out there so yeah, don't know why I undercut him to begin with. If only he wasn't 33.

Scutaro - A. Has showed lots of upside this season as a leadoff hitter and stellar defensively.

Hill - A. Leads team in homers. just great offensively and has had a great bounce back.

Lind - A. 19 HRs, 59 RBIs, 15th in the AL in avg. nuff said

Rolen - A-. has hit very well (not power) and is in the running for yet another GG

Overbay - B. had a very hot streak and helped power-wise. but i havent seen him make an impact since.

Wells - D+. has not lived up to his contract this season. has struggled at the plate and has made bad defensive decisions.

Rios - C. has not found his comfort zone but he could be better.

Barajas - C+. has shown no patient hitting this season and pops up and wastes oppurtinities far too often.

Millar - C. Getting old.

Bautista - B. Provides a great field variety (correct me if you may) and is a spark offensively and defensively off the bench.

McDonald - F. he doesnt play.

Cecil - C. unconfident since the BOS outing and was terrible. not ready for majors.

Rest of the bullpen - C-. far too many blown saves and bad outings by these guys. can't even get an out to help us.

those are very accurate grades, i really can't argue much about any of them.... maybe something minor like changing a "B" to "B-"....

but i think a lot of those grades are influenced by the recent losing woes.. the bullpen was absolutely fantastic in the first portion of the season, so that should be taken into consideration (unless it has  )

Ricky Romero- A+, if you forget about those couple of starts right after his injury, he's been our best pitcher. Front runner for ROY?
Doc- A same ol' Doc
Hill-A Great to see him realize his power potential, defence also has improved a ton
Lind- A Always believed in the guy, will be the heart of the blue jay lineup for years to come(along with Snider)
Scutaro-A shocking first half, as far as i'm concerned
Frasor- B+ very reliable
Rolen-B+ He's been healthy and producing pretty well
Scott Downs: B+ as reliable as ever, stupid way to get injured though
Overbay B doing his job well in that platoon, but his hitting against lefties limits our options
Rios: C he'll come around
Vernon C- see above

no comments for the rest
Richmond-B
Tallet- C-
Cecil-B-
Barajas- B
Chavez- B
Bautista- B
league-C
Millar-D
Mcdonald-C

So ummm.. at first I thought an D for Vernon would be harsh, and that he should probably be at the same level as Alex, who has fallen off again after picking it up for a few weeks. Then I read this.

So maybe a D is probably generous.

I think that most of the grades have been quite accurate. The only person that I would disagree with is M_T giving League a B. He has been extremely inconsistant this season, and often struggles to find the strike zone.

wow, i knew Vernon was sub par this year at Center field but i didn't know he was this bad. Move Rios to CF already, he belongs there anyways.
