So that back SF we need.... Bruce Bowen??

Given that we're making all of these moves to strengthen the D, do you guys think it's extremely far fetched to think we might go after Bowen with the little money we have left? I've never liked him and think he's a dirty SOB, but I wouldn't mind having him employing all that annoying/dirty defense for us. Anyone with me?

I thought about the same thing about signing Bowen. We could use our Bi-Annual which is 1.9 million for him. I doubt he would come here, he will most likely go back to the Spurs, or go to teams like Cavs, Magic, Lakers.

I don't think he can sign with the Spurs right away though. I think there is like a 30 day wait period that he has to wait before signing with the team that traded him. I assume he'll probably go to a contender, but you never know. He's won Championships already, maybe we can sell him on being the veteran presence on a young up-and-coming team that has the potential to surprise people.

As much as I would like to add him, i just dont see it. Bowen doesn't seem like the type of player to come be a veteran presence. I would love the second unit of Watson, Jones, Bowen, Hansbrough, Foster. We would have really good wings with Rush, Granger, Jones, and Bowen. All 4 good defensive players.

I think we need more people who can score, every uneducated sports writer seems to think our lack of fluid offense comes from having a lack of scorers....
call him if you're larry, offer him 2 years, with a team option for more? if he's playing well we'll keep him. Dude's already a cash money millionaire.

Re: So that back SF we need.... Bruce Bowen??
I don't think Bowen is the kind of guy we are looking for.
Sure, he is a terrific defensive player who used to lock down the top players on everyteam in the leauge. But you should notice that he was in the Spurs, one of greatest defense team. Bruce Bowen got help a lot from their team defense. How could you compare the young Pacers with the experienced Spurs on defesence?
If we do need a veteran who had a ring and could play good defense, I'd go after Ime Udoka. He's younger and better than Bowen on the offense end.

Bowen is still a very good defender, but I don't see him as a good fit. He'll probably want to go to a contender, my guess is he just waits the 30 days and re-signs with the Spurs.
For a team looking to play uptempo, he's not a great fit as he's better suited for a half-court game. He doesn't have great handles and isn't that athletic.

I'd love it! He'd be an awesome influence for Rush and Granger and the rest of the locker room, and he's very good in the community too. He's still good enough to play 10-15 minutes a game as a defensive and three point specialist, and would be very serviceable until Dunleavy gets back. I'd sign him in a heartbeat.

He allegedly had a falling out with the Spurs. Probably fell out of Duncans favor.
Problem with him is, you'd be signing a defensive specialist who isn't as good as he has been. Might be a nice bargain signing, but I wouldn't expect much more.

Don't know if he's willing to sign with us, but he can also knock down the three, so an old hound for 2 million MAXIMUM is what I'd say.

He'd be the only 'good' defender we signed all off-season (so not going to happen).

Dahntay Jones has one thing on his mind when he's on the court, and it's not scoring. Jones, who agreed to a four-year deal with the Pacers on July 8, plans to set the tempo for the Pacers defensively. "I'm very, very competitive and I take (defense) as a personal challenge," Jones said. "I have been taught by the coaches I played for that defense wins championships." Jones can defend point and shooting guards and small forwards. The Pacers gave up 106.2 points per game, near the bottom in the league last season. "We're trying to guard people," team president Larry Bird said "We talked about that right after the season. We know we're going to score points, but on the defensive end, we've got to get better." - Yahoo! Sports
Yahoo seems to disagree.

Bowen could be an interesting fit. I think O' Brien might start thinking about slowing it down some with the second unit. Obviously Foster, Hans, McBob (?), Jones and Watson won't be on the floor at the same time, but when the majority of them are, we certainly won't be shooting threes with 15 seconds left on the shot-clock.
I prefer Bowen over McBob.

I think we're more likely to see Hansbrough at the 3 than McBob personally.

Neither Hansbourough nor McBob can play the 3. Bowen would be a nice fit for us no matter what tempp we decide on. I mean as far as signing someone who is 50 but can still play some d, he is the best there is. He can knock down the three ball so offensively he isnt out of the loop. The only downfall I see is that we are trying to sign guys who may be part of our core, and since bowen is 75 years old, he may not be included in our future plans, but I would sign him for a year or two.

Re: So that back SF we need.... Bruce Bowen??
Bowen would be great.... as a trainer, or as someone in the sidelines, as a defensive coach, but as a player playing for the Pacers? i don't see it happening. He doesn't fit in and i don't think he could be that much beneficial.
Our defensive reserve unit would probably be:
Watson
D. Jones
??
Hansbrough / S. Jones
Foster
That would be a good support crew that could stop the other team from getting a momentum on offense..
BUT.. none of these guys can score at will. Hansbrough could be the go-to-guy of the defensive mob, but it is still a big question mark. And i don't think it's wise to put all the trust in a rookie.
IMO, we need a scoring three who has (at least) a developing defensive game, we need someone who could take over the scoring void caused by the loss of Jack, Daniels, and temporarily, Dunleavy.
There are i think a couple of guys in the market that could be cheap and worthy of a contract, ready to prove themselves and could "potentially" be a solid fixture in Obie's rotation.
And no, i'm not talking about Scalabrine or Giddens.

Re: So that back SF we need.... Bruce Bowen??
I envision Hansbrough as an interior defender, while Josh has the capabilities to play inside& out, but with less effectiveness in the paint. Even offensively Tyler will probably be our best interior offensive presence, even though he has some range.
Hansbrough is not a 3 Dunthreevy. Josh is pretty athletic, probably faster than Mike Dunleavy. He could atleast be an emergency 3.
Freeman you can pretty much leave Granger in at small forward. He'll be very close to 40 mpg.

Yeah, probably. But with his knees almost always needing rest i still think we need a decent back-up at SF. I just don't think it would be safe to play him 40 minutes a night.
That would be the case should Larry says goodbye to any other moves and says we're done for the offseason, but i personally think it's very unlikely. If we're not gonna find that back-up in the proposed three-way trade with Boston, there are still some cheap, deserving FA's worthy of a shot.
