OT: Ate at Jojo White's restaurant

Post#1 » by Dirty Water » Thu Aug 13, 2009 3:34 am

Not sure if this has been a topic before on this board but I ate at Jojo White's new restaurant in Maynard. I believe it's a couple months old now. It's a regular sports bar with TVs all around the joint. It's a little overpriced from what you'd expect out of a sports bar type place but the food didn't disappoint too much. The Coconut fried calamari appetizer was outrageous. You should look into it.

Well anyway I went there tonight it was a Wednesday wasn't expecting it to be that busy but it was pretty packed. Don't know if it's because it's still in the beginning stages so people are trying it out or restaurants of former athletes are always like that. Anyway what caught me completely off guard was that JoJo the man himself was standing by the bar talking to a couple people. Caught me off guard so I guess I was staring at anyone longer than is usually acceptable. He caught my glance so I looked at the TVs, kind of embarrassed I guess celebrities get that a lot. But what surprised me next was he tried to get eye contact on me and smiled and waved at me to come over. Couldn't really think of anything to ask him about I'm only 23 what do I know about his life? So I asked about what he thought of the Big Baby signing he thought the Celtics had the best frontcourt in the NBA, maybe even in the last decade of the league. Was a real nice guy.

Not sure if there are any happy hour specials there but seemed like a decent place to go watch the game after work have a beer an an appetizer. Doesn't help that it's way out in Maynard though. I heard he's opening other ones elsewhere? Not sure. I'd recommend it.

Man I love stories like these---Jojo seems like a real great guy...He was the PG for the C's when I first became a fan--way back in 1973--he was SOLID...Tommy was the head coach...Hondo/Cowens/Silas were all on that team .....Not another Franchise in the League that has as much loyalty from former players..!!

Ive met Jo Jo on numerous occasions and truly believe that he is the nicest person in all of sports. I met him once at a Celtics event while he was with his family and he talked to me for about 20 mins about the team.

Yeah, maybe he was just excited to see a young fan who knew who he was. But nonetheless I haven't had many celebrity experiences and I certainly wasn't expecting him to start the confrontation.

Nice story, the only celtics iv'e ever met were bob cousy, when he was a coach of the kings ,i met him after a kings -laker game in l.a. he was very polite ,i was 17 years old at that time,i even got his autograph but years later after i got married i lost his autograph when i moved into a new house. later on i met dennis johnson after the celtics won the 1984?championship against the lakers. I met him in victorville california at the san bernardino county fair,he use to go to victorville to visit his mother in law who lived there! after that i met him at the local sears store in the mall of victor valley. god rest his soul,he was very nice but a little standoffish, but i can understand because he was shopping with his family and probably wanted privacy. I did get an autographed picture of DJ at the count fair,i'll always treasure that picture ,and the the picture i got taken with him at the fair. :D

JoJo White and Heinsohn are probably the most loyal and active of former Celtics relative to the organization. Cousy and Russell hang out at games and stuff but JoJo works hard to promote the team. I have tons of respect for JoJo. I always thought it was crazy that he's not in the Hall of Fame. He was probably the third best player on those 70's teams behind Cowens and Hondo..

I live around the Maynard area and have been to Jojo's several times. Jojo is a really friendly guy and on most nights he walks around the restaurant greeting and talking with almost everyone. The couple of times my friends and I have been able to talk to him we've talked about the current Celtics. He told us that he chose Maynard because it was a safe place for the players to hang out and not get into any trouble. Adalius Thomas, Bill Russell, and Curt Schilling (who works in Maynard) have already been there and supposedly Vince Wilfork and Luis Tiant are co-owners but as far as I know they have not been. I would definitely recommend Jojo's.

Jo Jo is also one of the most popular ex-Jayhaks of all time, as he returns frequently to Lawrence. If not for an erroneous out-of-bounds call his long jumper would have sent KU to the 1966 Final Four instead of Texas Western and there would have been no "Glory Road".
