TPE-City

A brief primer for new posters on the Traded Player Exception.

MIN currently carries two TPE's:

$796,088 07/27/10 (Etan)
$732,625 08/13/10 (Q-rich)

In layman's terms, a TPE is created when a trade when there is an imbalance in the salaries between the players, where each team lining up the trade in a manner that benefits them most and still allows them to follow the CBA. In effect, the exception gives the team a 1-year window to complete a non-simultaneous trade before it expires. The "E" for exception means that it can be used to make a trade that does not follow rules that other teams over the salary cap must follow, namely, the 125% + $100,000 cap match requirements. While most TPE's generally are left to expire, they do give an owner who is willing to spend the option of taking on a player at 100% + $100,000 from another team, and sending nothing back, giving them immediate cap space. TPE's can't be combined, either with other players or even other TPE's.

I believe that Glen Taylor would be willing to use the TPE's if they could make the team better for 2010. Here's a fairly complete list of the players we could absorb with the TPE, at 100% + $100,000 ($896,088)

ATL: Randolph Morris, Joe Smith
BOS: Sheldon Williams, Bill Walker
CHA: Dontell Jefferson, Derrick Brown
CHI: Lindsey Hunter
CLE: Leon Powe, Jawad Williams, Darnell Jackson, Rob Kurz, Darryl Watkins
DAL: Tim Thomas, Nathan Jawai
DEN: Anthony Carter
DET: Will Bynum, Ben Wallace, DaJuan Summers, Jonas Jerebko, Deron Washington
GSW: Anthony Morrow
HOU: Joey Dorsey, James White, Jermaine Taylor, Chase Budinger
IND: Josh McRoberts
LAC: DeAndre Jordan
LAL: (no one)
MEM: Marcus Williams, Sam Young
MIA: Yakhouba Diawara, Joel Anthony, Jamaal Magloire, Mario Chalmers
MIN: Luc Mbah a Mute, Walter Sharpe, Jodie Meeks
NJN: Chris Douglas-Roberts
NOH: Ike Diogu, Marcus Thornton
NYK: Toney Douglas, Saer Sene, Chris Hunter, Joe Crawford
OKC: Kyle Weaver, Kevin Ollie
ORL: (no one)
PHI: Primoz Brezec
PHO: Louis Amundson, Taylor Griffin
POR: (no one)
SAC: Donte Greene, Sean May
SAS: Ian Mahinmi, DeJuan Blair, Marcus Williams, Marcus Haislip, Theo Ratliff, Malik Hairston
TOR: Patrick O'Bryant, Quincy Douby, Sonny Weems
UTA: Krsylo Fesenko
WAS: Dominic McGuire

Whew! Anyway, many of the players here are unlikely to be "traded" for a TPE, because they are worth too much to their team, as a promising young player (DeAndre Jordan) or a FA they picked up intentionally this off-season (Ben Wallace). I'm listing them all for the benefit of future traders, who may be looking for a piece to balance a trade.

Anyway, teams may have other reasons to trade these guys. MinMilMan's great site

.. can give us a quick summary of teams that are currently over the 15-man roster limit, and may need to buy someone out (DAL-17 and MIL-16) and the teams over the lux of $69,920,000

LA Lakers $91,341,066
Dallas $90,536,464
Cleveland $82,600,749
Utah $82,231,422
Boston $81,490,019
Orlando $80,009,959
San Antonio $79,821,833
Phoenix $78,412,846
Washington $78,076,229
Houston $74,633,444
New York $74,051,149
Denver $73,589,693
New Orleans $73,581,295
Miami $72,216,178

I think the place to start is to focus on teams in the second half of the list, who are close to the lux and getting back their lux share, and often aren't necessarily the top competitors for a title. The TPE's could serve as a useful simultaneous trade to add incentive to another deal. For example, PHO, SAS, or WAS are all over the lux in 2009-10, but under the lux in 2010-11 .. though not far enough to make a free agent splash. TPE's and Atkins may be valuable enough to make taking on Songalia's second year cost effective (which is where I'll be looking first).

Its quite possible that Glen Taylor will simply let the TPE's expire, like most GM's do, but they provide an option that may make a trade work for both teams.
