Best LCD TV to View Wizards Games
Hey fellas, I thought there was a thread on this, but I couldn't find it. My 50 inch Samsung DLP broke down yet again, and I'm looking to get a new TV. Many people have recommended an LCD for me because I have a 2 story family room with lots of light (and no curtains/shades). I'm looking at at the 52 inch Sony XBR 9 series and the new 55 inch LED Samsung 8000 series with 240 HZ. However, I'm still concerned that I'm going to see motion blur on either set. I primarily watch sports on TV and will not be happy if I see motion blur during Wizards games. Does anyone have one of these tvs and could you let me know if there is any motion blur (I saw the Sony at Best Buy and it definitely had motion blur, but the salesman said all of their TVS are not hooked up with HDMI and have 780 resolution, not 1080p.). Thanks in advance for any help and please feel free to merge in another thread if there is one existing.

I got a Samsung when C.City went out of Bizz, 52" 120Hz w/50,000 shades of Black (Contrast). The more contrast you have and faster refresh rate the more your going to pay. Make sure you get 1080 something and 120Hz is a must. Sports fans love 120Hz or more.
I I'm very happy w/ the brand, customer service and quality of the TV.
The Wizards look so good in 1080i - soon to be 1080P one day......
I will say that the porn at 1080P might be TOO clear.

I loves me some TV talk. GOt me a 50'' Samsung 1080p plasma last Feb and I friggin love it. It's in a room with a LOT of light and the glare still doesn't really bother me that much. I will say that it looks the best at night though (obviously). Pretty much anyone will tell you that Samsung is the way to go these days, at least from what I was told when I was shopping for my set. Sony has always been reliable and longlasting but my guess is that you'll be paying a pretty penny for it, whereas Samsung TVs are affordable.
From what I remember the Wiz on Comcast looked pretty crystal clear but certain channels (TNT, NBC) have infinitely better HD than others. I can't tell you how excited I was for Thurs night NBA games on TNT becuase their HD is so outstanding. Can't wait for the NFL to start too...it looks like you're in the stadium sometimes.

Do you guys notice any motion blur at all with 120 HZ when watching sports? I have the money to pay for the 240 HZ but don't know if I need it.

hmmm...tough to say for me since I have a plasma. If I'm correct I think plasmas don't really have a lot of motion blur problems and I've never noticed it with mine. I also have one of those 600hz sub-field motion TVs so I don't have any experience with Tvs that are 120hz. Have fun looking though! Gotta love shopping for a TV.

I also bought a Samsung 50" 1080p a few years ago, and I pretty much reached the exact same conclusion as you: Samsung and Sony looked like the top choices, roughly equal in my eye, but Sony came with a not-insignificant premium price increase attached that didn't seem to bring any essential extra features along with it, so Samsung was the pick. It's been real good to me, haven't doubted my choice for a moment since then.

MJG, do you also have your plasma in a room with lots of light. Just curious if you have had a glare issues. I'd prefer to get a plasma over LCD because at 600 hz there should be no motion blur, but I also want to be able to see my picture during the daytime.

Do Not buy your tv at best buy! Good God! i bought mine there and have regretted it since day one. First they give me the run around about 720p vs 1080p so i settled for a 720p and am currently giving up 1.000.000 pixels compared to the 1080p.
Find a 'the big screen store' or equivalent and hear them out. Better TV's, better knowledge, better help, better service, better warranties!
The newest thing is motionflow, it completely shuts the door on motion blur since it creates a transition frame between every frame. ask someone who knows in a store that specializes in tv's and see them side by side (motionflow vs non). you'll be sold (remember the first time you saw plasma and the hair on your arms stood up, try motion flow and you'll get the same feel. it pretty amazing)
good luck

Re: Best LCD TV to View Wizards Games
I recently bought a 50 inch Panasonic Plasma and from what i've learned in the process, Plasma is the best option for watching sports. The 600 hz doesn't have to do with motion blur. Plasmas, by nature of the technology, don't have motion blur problems at all. Plasmas have deeper blacks than LCD's.
Also, the newer plasmas have way less problems with viewing in well lit rooms. I live in a condo with a balcony off of the living room, where the tv is, and I can see very well with the verticals wide open.

LCD = Plasma??

Put them next to each other (720p and 1080p) and tell me you can't tell. Then call Bausch and lomb.

The question is about the chip set for the TV for the redraw or edge smoothing, the refresh rate is the hertz rate, 120 is the standard for sports, 240 would be 2X faster.
Find a 60hz TV and all of this will seem clear, your looking for vibrations on the screen, look close at the edges. You'll see it. Then Check out that 240Hz Samsung.
FWIW BestBuy is pumping in a feed to make everything look good. It's all sales.

For sure. I'm not really sure why Sony thinks they can tack on an extra $300-$400 for their product. I guess they have a history of putting out products that last for a long time but come on; there's no way I'm going to pay that much more when a Samsung does the same thing for less.
and about glare/lighting issues...my plasma is in the sun room of my house and, yea, during the day I get glare when I'm watching shows that are darker. But when I'm watching a game I barely notice the glare because the green of the football field or the brownish/orangeish of the bball court is so bright and clear that it eliminates it. I guess it bothers some people more but for me it's more than fine.

Re: Best LCD TV to View Wizards Games
The thing about sports though is that a lot of the transmissions are just absolute crap and are going to look crappy and pixelated no matter what kind of tv you have because it's not the tv's fault. I got a 52" recently and my basic strategy was to look for a 120 hz 1080p 52" tv, any brand except vizio, that was having some sort of internet special sale, like at buy.com or whatever. The sharp I got was pretty reasonable, about the same price as a Samsung I got for my wife a few months earlier but 120hz instead of 60.
Speaking of crappy cable transmissions, comcast was jerking me around -- I moved into a new place and they were like, oh, you have to wait for a month while we decide whether to allow you to have internet or not. So I went across the street and got Cricket broadband. Idiots. It's like they're trying to drive customers away.

I will go old school on the tv topic. Mitsubishi is just about the last producer of DLP televisions. They have weaknesses (bulb change, geometry, etc.) but they are by far the best bang for the buck. You can get a 65" Mitsubishi (probably around 72 lbs) ( model 737) for around $1500.If anyone buys one of these tvs though, spend the few hundred bucks to get an extended warranty. I have a 56" JVC from 2006 and I expect its issues to get to the point where the warranty company will offer me a settlement for the TV and then I'll have that money to buy a new TV.
I think the whole LCD/Plasma movement has been driven more by form than substance. If you have to mount your tv on the wall, then you're probably mounting it too high for a good viewing angle. But people like the way they look.
One other thing--if you have the opportunity to get Fios, don't hesitate. SD channels look significantly better than Comcrap and HD is amazing. Plus, faster internet, but I digress...

I have a 50" Samsung DLP and I love the picture on it. The problem is that in the last year, I paid for two new lamps and a new color wheel costing $800 and the color wheel just went again. At this point, I don't want to put any more money in this tv and all the service people/dealers have told me that DLPs have more repair issues because they have more "moving parts." All recommend either LCD or Plasma.

Yeah, that is the downfall of DLP, which is why an extended warranty is essential. Some warranties will also include a bulb replacement or two. I wouldn't put any more into the tv either. Unfortunately Samsung discontinued their LED/DLP tvs that did not have bulbs you had to replace every 2000-6000 hours.

I have a 61" Samsung LED DLP 1080P 120 HZ, and it's awesome! Unfortunately, they are discontinued. I think the most important thing is to either use a calibration disc ( I use Avia Guide to Home Theater) or for you to pay for ISF calibration, this makes a huge difference and allows you to get the most out of your investment.

I still have my 37" Dell in my livingroom that I bought in 2006, but I have changed from three HD component cables to one HDMI cable. Much less messy and slightly better picture quality. I've also got a 32" Vizio in my bedroom. It's not hooked up to an HD receiver but the picture is still pretty good, especially considering I got it on sale for under $400.
Not a "home theater" but I'm pretty satisfied. Don't see myself upgrading anytime soon.
