0.852 save % in the opener.
Dude appears to be regressing, not progressing. Nothing affects W's/L's like the quality of play between the pipes.
How long until The Monster, Jonas Gustavsson, takes over the primary duties?
As far as I'm concerned, the sooner the better. We don't owe Vesa a single thing - except the final year of his contract, until he's gone for good....

Re: Toskala - dead weight.
Tonight is not the night to blame Toskala for his performance. All 4 of the leaf goals tonight were because of a defensive zone breakdown, and two as a result of stupid penalties by Komisarek. Toskala didn't have a chance on any of the goals other than maybe the Moen goal but that was more Beauchemin's fault for giving it away behind the net. The last goal was bad coverage by Schenn and then the backcheckers didn't pick up the trailer (Gorges).

Re: Toskala - dead weight.
Komo and the rest of your defense (minus Kaberle) lost the game for you guys, not Toskala.
Beauchemin was out of position how many times for going after a big hit and missing? Schenn missed a few assignments that led to goals for the Habs.
Have fun with Komo and his ugly new contract, though. I'm glad we're paying the same amount to have what Gionta brings. Good luck this year.

0.852 save percentage. Jesus Christ I hate when people use stats to prove their point. Toskala played well enough in net, and made some good saves. He had little to no chance on all the goals allowed. Toskala was more tested than Price actually, despite the discrepancy in shots. Leafs just threw the puck at the net, showing little creativity. The Canadians made their shots count.

He's certainly not dead weight. I doubt he'll be back next year, but he's a fine goaltender to have stand in for us while Gustavsson adjusts to life in the NHL.

Re: Toskala - dead weight.
well, so much for expecting your goalie to actually outdual his opponent let alone hold his own.
the apologists here are too much....
i had patience with Vesa last year, but i loathe the idea of having to spend another year watching this guy look like a deer lost in the headlights.

Komisarek's contract is solid. The reports of him commanding $6M were incorrect, and he signed for an incredibly reasonable $4.5M. Easily the going rate for a defenseman of his calibre and at his age. For him to be overpaid over the course of his contract, he'd pretty much have to regress, because I'd say at times with Montreal this past season he was worth that amount. Nonetheless, he still has to earn it, so let's see what happens. But just by judging it at face value, it's a fair contract to give out.
Gionta is a great signing for Montreal. Nice quicks, great hands, should score some goals. But if you think his contract is any better (and his cap it is $0.5M larger than Komisarek's), I don't know what to tell you (judging it purely on face value). The Leafs were criticized so much for picking up Blake for $4M a year or a few years down the road into his contract, and now he's producing at a decent rate. At the end of his contract, Gionta will be the same age as Blake now, and not to mention his production has been nothing stellar since that 48 goal season like 3 years ago. The last 3 seasons he hasn't scored more than 25 goals. Gionta will be overpaid at some point in his contract no doubt ($5M cap hit this season could even be excessive, we're only 1 game into the season), but for the time being, I like the addition. I just don't see how you can make that comment without being biased, in terms of Komisarek/Gionta. They both have plenty to prove and I would say Gionta moreso, since he's being looked upon as a HUGE offensive contributor this season.

Re: Toskala - dead weight.
He's been bad. But honestly, I'm not seeing the improved defensive "team" so far that had been advertised in the offseason. Granted, it's tough to defend against the Caps, but our defencemen seem flat-skated, and our young forwards generally don't seem to even give a damn about defence.
It's sad, but the only guy who seems to know what's he's supposed to do out there on defence so far is ol' Kaberle.

Re: Toskala - dead weight.
I still can't believe Burke traded 2 1st rounders and a 2nd for Kessel. Leafs will be in the bottom half of the league again this season and they will have a legitimate shot at the #1 draft choice. I thought it was a terrible move at the time and I still think it's a terrible move. 2011 first rounder + a quality prospect is more than enough for Kessel. Who else was offering anything close to what the Leafs offered? Boston couldn't afford him anyways and I think Burke didn't play hard ball enough. At some point you just have to walk away and keep your primary assets.

You're over exaggerating. It's 2 games into the season. We lost the first game when we had a lead late in the 3rd and we lost the second to one of the best teams in the NHL. This team will not be a bottom 5 team this season. And if you're not bottom 5, then you're not in the lottery for the top pick. A 21 year old potential 40 goal scorer is worth more than two mid 1st rders. The 2nd rder I don't even count because most picks in the 2nd rd will never even skate in the NHL and a 2nd rder can be obtained easily (Dominic Moore for a 2nd last year for example).

Nashville was offering John Blum, Alexander Radulov and a pick.
LA had a offer on the table also.
We are two games into the season. I for one think this team miss's the playoffs but I still think the pick is going to be in the 9-12 range. I can easily name 6-7 teams that are worse then the Leafs right now and when Kessel comes back and this team gets more comfortable with the new defence pairings (they have all only played limited minutes with guys they have never played with before) this team should be improved on what you currently see. I'm also not nearly as concerned with next years pick seeing we have about 15 million dollars to spend this offseason and make a play for someone like Savard, Kovalchuk, Marleau, Jokinen etc. When its all said and done we are prolly looking at something like 2010 #10-12, 2011 #15-18 and a second round pick. A 2011 first rounder plus prospect would not have been enough for Kessel. The 2011 draft is projected to be one of the worst in along time and that pick will be in the middle of the first round.
I sometimes think people forget how skilled Kessel is. Hes only 21 years old, scored 36 goals only receieving 16 minutes of ivetime last season and barely 2 minutes of powerplay time. You wont find many guys in the NHL that scored at the pace he did last season that are younger then him.
