Kevin Martin has hairline fracture in wrist

Post#1 » by Geoff35 » Thu Nov 5, 2009 11:10 pm

An MRI taken on Kevin Martin’s left wrist revealed a non displaced hairline fracture of the navicular bone. The treatment options are currently being evaluated.

The club will release more information when it becomes available.

This is bad, the navicular/scaphoid is not an easy healing bone.... obviously hairline is better than straight up fracture, but still not looking good.

Not to worried about it. He had 29 points last night with this injury
Sometimes you just have to look yourself in the mirror and say....Tyreke Evans.
That just happened.

I wasn't worried about his ankle sprain either because he walked off the court with it w/o the help of his teammates. Look at how that turned out. It surprises me because he really wasn't showing signs of pain during the game. He grabbed his ribs a few times but that's about it. I'm glad that it's his left wrist and not his right wrist.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that bone is extremely hard to heal. If you don't take care of it properly, it can lead to debilitating arthritis that will make even any moderate activity for K-mart in the future very painful.

From medical Textobook

""On average, the time required for a fracture of the waist of the scaphoid of a bone that is not displaced to heal is two to three months in a cast."

So if the reports are right, he could be out til the ASB.

I would think he could play through it with a brace...I mean, if it's his non-shooting wrist then a hairline could heal on its own, even through movement. My daughter broke her tibia a month or so ago and had a cast on it for 2 weeks. So Maybe he could get a soft cast and play through it?

these take 6-12 weeks to heal. Most that are treated within 28 days of the injury heal completely. They do put a cast on. Due to the unusual nature of the blood supply to this bone, some take 6 months to heal.

Is this guy ever going to play a complete season?

I don't know. From the sounds of it, it's a pretty special bone that should be handled carefully, or it won't heal right or not heal at all. A hairline fracture doesn't sound that bad, so he'll probably just need a cast and refrain from agitating it to prevent it from fracturing even more, which at that point might require surgery.

Anyway, what rotten luck!

Again, if the reports are right, this will be a very hard injury to just play through. The bone is tiny and if it doesn't heal properly (which it won't be able to if he's playing), it can become necrotic. At that point, he'd need surgery...and that could put him out a season. So I'm sure they'll do what's best for his long-term health.

At least he will be joining a pretty good backcourt when he comes back next season, with John Wall and Evans.

Seriously, the Kings have EARNED the #1 pick this summer, already, after 5 games. Between Garcia's FREAK accident and Martin's PHANTOM wrist injuries, we may need to get a 'WRIST strengthening' specialist.

****! Come on! Can he catch a break?

No, I don't have him in fantasy or something...he's just really good and I've been rooting for him.

He still might.we'll have to see. My hunch is he's out two weeks and plays with a soft case for a month after.

You can't play ball with this injury and tough it out. Minimum month/month and half out.

I'm not a doctor (yet), but a scaphoid fracture classically does not heal quickly. They''ll probably place him in a cast for 8 weeks at minimum, until they're completely sure the fracture has healed. It is a slow-healing bone, and one that is crucial for proper range of motion of the wrist joint. Improper healing can cause traumatic arthritis or even necrotic destruction of the bone. It is fortunate that it did not occur in his shooting hand.

He has no reason to rush back, and the team has no reason to ask him to.

Return to Sacramento Kings
