Ray's son sick..........

Post#1 » by Kefa461 » Sat Nov 28, 2009 8:51 pm

Celtics guard Ray Allen missed practice Saturday to be with his son, Walker, who was hospitalized. Allen then boarded the Celtics' flight to Miami for Sunday's game, according to a team source.

Wasn't his son diagnosed in spring 2008 with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus? I have treated hundreds and hundreds of Type 2 diabetics during my career - many with oral agents, many eventually require an insulin regimen (+/- an oral agent). 100% of Type 1 Diabetics are insulin dependent from the gitgo. Adults with Type 1 DM can be difficult to treat. I know from my pediatric endocrinology colleagues that children, especially little kids like Ray's son can be tremendously difficult to treat. When they get a typical kiddy viral/bacterial illness and get dehydrated, they easily become hyperglycemic, many with ketoacidosis - this requires hospitalization, IV hydration with saline and appropriate electrolyte replacement, an IV insulin drip, and antibiotics if bacterial infection is diagnosed. Let's hope this is a relatively minor episode. There are a great number of outstanding pedi endos at the Harvard, Tufts and BU affiliated hospitals. I am sure Ray's child is in good hands. I wish him my best!

I'm coming down with H1N1, I'm guessing, feeling miserable, and I"m thinking that it's a good thing there are no underlying problems, you always think it's the elderly or people laid up in the hospital that are at risk and you never think of little kids with diabetes or other problems like maybe asthma that could possibly run into trouble with this virus. I hope all is well and if Ray is on his way to the Sunday game, then maybe they're just taking precautions....

Walker Allen was discharged today. My educated guess is that he did not have a serious infection. Rather, he got bit dehydrated due to a viral GI illness/vomiting/diarrhea, his blood glucose jacked up, and he needed 24-36 hours of IV hydration and a temporary IV insulin drip. I am happy for you, Ray Ray. Your kid's health means a billion times more than any basketball game.
