Mo Evans for Kurt Thomas?

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Fri Feb 12, 2010 4:39 pm

While the Bucks have had serious discussions with the Pacers, they have also been in talks with the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks are in the market for another big man and have more than a passing interest in Bucks veteran Kurt Thomas. The Bucks have expressed interest in Hawks swingman Maurice Evans who isn’t much of an offensive threat -- 4.9 points in 15 minutes a game this season – but a stellar defender. Because Thomas makes $3.8 million and Evans makes $2.5 million, the Hawks would have to throw in another player to make the deal work. One possibility would be Randolph Morris, a 24-year-old forward who makes $855,000. Morris is averaging 2.3 points in 22 games. Link

I like it and personally don't really consider Evans a stellar defender (too many careless fouls this year). Personally, I'd rather include Jason Collins than Randolph Morris, but either would be fine to get it done.

Shame. I really thought Evans would become a better defender this year. He said he buffed up for the like of Kobe and Lebron right?

So, get Kurt Thomas then sign a NBDL guy? Or take back Othello?

Take Thomas. Evans cannot defend with out fouling. Get rid of Collins before Morris.
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

I like this deal for several reasons and hesitate for one.

It looks good because first we are getting another solid contributor to our frontcourt. He is a solid defender and can play either 4 or 5. With Thomas, Joe Smith, and Zaza, we should be able to handle most of what other teams are throwing at us. I might like to hang on to Collins for the simple purpose of having a bigger body and extra fouls to throw at Shaq/Howard. But I like Morris more, so it might be cool to keep him if possible. There's another benefit in that Thomas' contract is expiring. We will have more flexibility this offseason to potentially bring back Chill or make some other solidifying moves. This trade could also open up some other opportunities this trade deadline.

The only downside to this deal that I can see is that we will be thin at the 3 (never thought I'd say that on this team). Marvin is our only real SF, while JJ and Smoove could play there some. I guess we could bring somebody in on a 10-day contract to see if it works. I just don't see that being a good situation. If Marvin gets banged up (which does happen just about every year), we will have nobody but fill-ins, which is not good for a team in contention.

The only way I believe we can do this deal is if we can make another deal that brings in a decent SF in return.

^^^ Amen. I also believe that we need to bring in another guy like Mo if we get Kurt. Preferably a defensive 3 that can shoot the 3.

I'd like the Hawks to keep Mo Evans for Kobe, Pierce, Roy, Lebron and Wade. He has no use outside of guarding Elite 2's and 3's. Sounds stupid, but I think he plays to the level of his competition. I'd like it more if the Hawks sent Marvin Williams + ZAZA + 1st and some cash for Chris Kaman + Al Thornton. Then you get a real center, a fairly capable 3 (who will come off the bench in place of Josh Smith). But Josh has to go back to playing the 3, which isn't that hard to swallow.

While Thornton is supposedly being shopped I don't think Kaman is at this time, so I just don't see that trade as available.

Kurt Thomas goes to Chicago as part of the Salmons deal. I'm thinking Milwaukee sneaks into the playoffs.

Perhaps I posted too soon. It might be Hakim Warrick to Chicago instead of Thomas.
