I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about this game. It looks like for whatever reason the team didn't prepare well and more than one player didn't show up. Or sometimes a team just has a bad game. Take away that one horrible quarter and it was close. Rudy Gay scored 19 points against argueably one of the best defensive small forwards in the league in Batum.
actually, it was Roy on Gay. Batum defended Mayo most of the night which in large part explains Mayo's performance (although Batum wasn't guarding Mayo when Mayo was shooting FT's)
Let's not forget Portland is a really good team and Brandon Roy a fantastic leader. From what I read he challenged his team at halftime and they responded. I hear you about Gay not being that kind of leader, but I think a player either has that in him or he doesn't. It's not a trait you develop in my opinion. I can't slam Rudy Gay for not being that kind of player.
Roy is a leader but this has been a difficult season for him. The Blazers never got in sync early in the season, in no small part because Roy was having difficulty adjusting to Andre Miller and Greg Oden being legitimate options on offense. Then Oden went down. Roy and Miller finally started to develop some chemistry when Roy injured his hamstring. He's still not healthy, and that was in evidence last night as he didn't have full lateral quickness to defend Gay or his normal explosion on dribble penetration.
But he's still able to assert his will on the team. Blaming Gay because he may not be able to do the same is a bit unfair. Gay has his talents, and some are quite good.
