Aw Tony, we're into nicknames? Ha ha. Not trying to ruin the thread, I just didn't expect you to be that old.

I've asked this question of the old school fans myself. Think it should be a good thread if we can get the right posters in here.

Guessing DEEP hasn't replied yet because he will have one of the most well thought out, evidence-laden, well respected posts of the year. Lookin forward to it.

There was a post like this in the Player Comparisons forum on the main board...

Wilt was an incredibly physically gifted specimen... Think a 7"+ LeBron... Only maybe more so...
Wikipedia his stats including his track and field stats sometime.

Not to say he wasn't also skilled but he was just a physical beast. He could run, jump, react... And he was really quick for his size...

And KAJ was his biggest matchup problem.
Kap used skill and mobility to counter Wilt's length, speed and strength.

It's like a Kobe/LeBron discussion a year or 2 ago...

Wilt was more physically gifted but Kaj was a better all-around player.

Kap was also Clutch as hell... His swing-left-shoot-right skyhook was pretty much undefendable and if you fouled him he would bury the free throws.
Kareem was maybe the last truely great big man free throw shooter. Many of his incredible points came at the line.

Not to mention Kareem was a better team player and more interested in the team winning than he was about personal stats. This one is pretty close as both of them were pretty arrogant and Kareem was more of an introvert where Wilt was kind of an exibitionist.
Neither hurt their teams, but it's just a matter of degrees...

To me KAJ was better... Physical gifts fade but skills and focus lengthen careers.

You could build around Kareem and not have to think about a starting C for 20 years.

Isn't Yao an incredible freethrow shooting center?

Anyways, KAJ on this one too. Although that's just a slight bias.

Yao's more fragile than Ming Pottery... Honestly, who can remember? :)

I forgot about Yao... Just like I do every year at this time.

I don't like judging player i didn't actually see play. KAJ is my all time favorite Center, but 100 points is 100 points & averaging 23 rebounds a game for your career is remarkable & hard to beat. In saying that i'm still going to remain neutral because as i stated before, never saw the big dipper play live.

I'm copping out here...but, I think Wilt was the most dominant basketball player ever, while Kareem is probably the most skilled center to ever play the game.

The most skilled center to ever play the game is Hakeem.
He isn't the best because he wasn't so dominant as KAJ,Wilt,Russell,Shaq but he is most skilled center to ever play.

Hakeem was very skilled there is no doubt & totally belongs in that discussion. Hakeem could dribble hit the 10-15 footer & had crazy post moves that were not only out of this world but gave Shaq fits!

But Kareem was a decent dribbler 7' 2" had a very decent mid range game , didn't have an aray of post moves for the skill that is still unmatched to this day. His skyhook. Not only was it deadly & clutch, it was unstoppable & unblockable. That my friend is a skill unmatched to this very day in the NBA.

Skyhook is one move!Hakeem had a lot of moves and that's why he is most skilled center to ever play the game!
Also don't forget the footwork of Hakeem! The best footwork from a big man!

But as I said before KAJ is the best between the two!Was more dominant and more effective and had a greater career!

I think most people only remember KAJ when he was pushing 40... He relied on the skyhook because no one could really stop it. But when he was younger, he was a lot mor active and had a lot more to his game.

I don't think anyone had better footwork or understood the game any better and how to react and let it come to him. He was an underated defender. To me it's almost microscopically close and I think people who saw Hakeem play more will say Hakeem and those who saw more of KAJ's career will say Kap...

So I don't really want to split hairs with the 'most skilled' thing especially since this was about KAJ/Wilt... But I think it's important to have a complete picture of Kareem throughout his career.

Maybe you are right that most people only remember KAJ when he was pushing 40.
But I'm not one of them!I watched a lot of old games KAJ early years with Bucks with Oscar Robertson,Lucius Allen,Jon McGlocklin and with Lakers with Adrian Dantley,Norm Nixon.
I know his greatness!I know that Skyhook was unstoppable! But this don't give him most skilled big man who ever play the game.
As I said before Hakeem was most skilled big man who ever play the game.
But in my opinion KAJ,Wilt and Russell are the three greatest Centers ever play the game and three GOAT discussion players.Hakeem isn't in this group.
