OT: I want to go see snow.. skiing?

Post#1 » by Speedlot » Sun Mar 21, 2010 8:19 am

I live in orange county (30 miles ish from LA). I'm wondering for suggestions as well as tips or personal experiences you guys may have. I wanna take my novia and we're both college students so budget is a slight problem. I have no clue. I've never been to snowboarding or ski-ing. I don't even know how much it would cost. Any tips will be appreciated. I'm doing my best to google this out, but i figured the forums might help.

Big Bear has more snow then Denver right now because of all those rainstorms you guys got. Spring boarding rocks too to learn, snow is soft and its not miserable cold. You miss a little of the 'winter' effect though, snow in the trees, bundling up...

Couple things

1. Skiing is easier on you to start, but it more boring. The learning curve is much longer and you are stuck in a basic mode typically for longer. Also more stuff to rent, typically more expensive.

2. Boarding, will hurt a little more at first, but you learn fast. There are just a couple points that when you get them, you get them, kinda like riding a bike, once you get that first balance with no one holding you up it just clicks in your head and then you can roll with it.

Boarding is funner imo, I grew up skiing since I was 5 but I was more of a skater kid so when boards came out it was natural for me. Its more comfortable too when you are hanging out on the mountain, no stiff boots, no poles to lug around etc.

Just go, rent a place with a hottub, board your butt off then party afterward. Thats how its done on the mountain :) If you come to Denver I'll teach ya, but I'd reccomend driving up to Big Bear right now. Look around you can probably find a 2-3 day pass for 150$ ish, where as its probably 90-100 for a single day pass. Plan on a good amount for food and stuff as well, they jack the prices up at the resorts cause you have no where else to go. 10$ hamburgers are the norm lol. Just enjoy it though, the ski town, people, and life is just different, fun to experience...

I recommend you buy boarding butt pads before you go snowboarding. It will easen the fall and encourage you to try to learn how to board properly and not play it safe being afraid to fall, which won't help ya actually learn. Get butt pads, trust me, they do wonders!

Mountain High and Big Bear are the 2 resorts in southern california people often go to. Mountain High is a little cheaper and a little closer to OC, but Big Bear I think has nicer slopes. (I'm in OC myself)

Okay Im a border, I have been riding well over 18 years. The three posts previous to mine are very good feedbacks and I agree with most of them. Local spot would probably be mountain high. Good for starters a bit too packed for my taste, but again its local and they are cheap. Also if you can go into sports chalet and they offer a lot of specials like discount coupons for lifts etc. If your starting out you probably want to get your gear from the same place your riding at that way you dont have to worry about anything. You get your ish and your done riding and then you return it and your all done. BUT I live in Ladera Ranch so if you need a good board then feel free to p.m a mod and they can give you my info and I can hook you and your girl up with a couple of my boards and then all you need is the boots when you get up there.

Let me know.

Oh and heres a pic from one of my last trips at copper mountain in Colorado.
