What does Memphis do?

Laugh in our face at this offer then hang up on us. Then call us back and laugh at us some more.

Say it's a solid offer, but no thanks. We're just going to match Gay at 13 mil a year over 5 years.

Make a counter offer that doesn't include their pick. Thabeet + Gay for Flynn + Gomes + Hollins + Utah's pick.

Take the deal, they didn't want to overpay Gay anyway.

Min/Mem?

We call up Memphis and say, seeing as we just drafted John Wall and have plenty of cap space, Gay wants to sign with us. We know you don't want to pay him 13 mil a year, and we know you want to get some value back for him. So let's talk shop. No, you can't have Kevin Love or Rubio in a sign and trade. But how about Ryan Gomes, Jonny Flynn, and Utah's pick (#23 or 24) for Gay (sign and trade) + your pick (#13).

Gomes is a solid combo forward that shoots the 3 and plays decent defense and rebounds. You might still start Brewer, but Gomes would look awfully nice coming off your bench. We like Flynn, but we have Rubio next year and Sessions on the bench.

I know what you're thinking. Why are you giving us the better pick? Because Flynn's worth more than that pick and will probably be the starter of the future for you guys and we could sign Gay to a 5 year, 13 mil a year deal without giving you anything and we all know you don't want to match that. So we have to get some value back for Flynn and Gomes outside of Gay. In fact, if you don't work out a sign and trade that's exactly what we're going to do.

Memphis easily passes on that. And you can't do a sign and trade until after July 7th. The draft is June 24th. Yes, you could draft the players, then make the trade, but that complicates things.

Do you think Memphis wants to match that contract though? They have one of the harder to read owners in the league. My theory is they don't want to match an offer for Gay that high, and would rather get some value back instead of nothing (or worse yet sign him and regret it later).

I don't really think Gomes/Utah's pick is much for value coming back. Not for them anyways.

Heisley's recently said they would match any offer. Of course he was speaking to season ticket holders, so what is he supposed to say? I think they would match that, though. They almost have to in order to be considered a legit team.

Don't be shocked if they move up in the draft. Kentucky ain't far from Tennesse. And Evan Turner plays in a mid-west, small market area. Both Wall and Turner would be nice fits with OJ Mayo. Heisley couldn't afford to break that team up if that happens. Stern would like to help one of his franchises that's hurting the most.

Sorry, I still have my tinfoil hate on.

You mean you take it off? It only works if you leave it on all the time!!

Gomes is just a replacement on a fair contract. He's worth about as much as it would cost to sign him, so it's not a big deal. On the other hand, Rudy Gay is hopefully worth as much as we'd be paying him, but there's a lot of risk involved with that. It's an early 20's pick + Flynn for an early teens pick, which is good value for them (especially since they need a PG).

This is all predicated on them not wanting to actually sign Gay to a big contract though. If the owner meant it and they actually want him at 13 mil a year, so be it. I just don't think they do, and I think Gay wants out of there too. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I'm still a believer in Conley. With that said, do you think Flynn has that much upside that he surpasses Conley?

I do, but it may be because I make an unfair generalization.

I usually withhold judgement on a PG until I've seen him play two years. For some guys, it takes a little while for them to "get it." I use Deron Williams as an example, but Chauncey Billups took even longer. I would put Flynn in front of Conley because Conley's been on an NBA team far longer, and still hasn't demonstrated that he was a legit pick.

I picked the rally monkey, it sounded the most realistic to me.
