Talk to me about Wesley Matthews

Is he the answer at the two or do the Jazz fill the need in FA/draft?

He definitely could become the answer. He is the ultimate role player, a guy that won't put up big numbers but helps you win. He's our best on ball defender, is becoming a better 3 point shooter, and is a nice finisher at the basket.

Think of Bruce Bowen, not as big and still a rookie so not quite the same defender (yet), but an 80% free throw shooter. He's really starting to hit that corner 3.

If he can keep consistently knocking down his jumpshot, he could very well be the answer. He's just as good of a finisher around the basket as Brewer was IMO and probably a better defender. I'd hate to see him go.

He doesn't really crash board and rack up assists, but the man can shoot, and he's a very good defender. He shows lots of potential given he's just a rookie and he's already playing with the basketball IQ of a veteran.

Matthews is consistently becoming a great role player. I can see him putting 14 ppg/ 3 rpg/ 3 ast plus his intangibles next year. He is already averaging close to 12/ 2.7/ 2 as a rookie since Brewer was traded.

Which is awesome if you consider he has two guys who have been averaging about 20/10 averages in that time period (Williams/Boozer), and Okur has been really hot since too. Miles is also average 12-13ppg in that period too. Pretty amazing the offense we have in our 6-7 top scorers.

He is our new version of Bryon Russell. Great defender. Above average long shooter. Average finisher around the rim (IMO...but its debatable). Extremely good FT shooter. But needs a system and great players to play off of. I wouldnt expect him to be this great with a team full of "me first" players like the Warriors.

He would never pass the requirements to be a Warriors player. His game IQ is just too high.

He's a likable guy and he does what we need. I'm not sure anyone in the FO really considers him "the answer", though. Role players are great (and necessary) but they don't stop you from checking out other options, which I'm sure the Jazz will do.

In response to the initial question, it kind of depends on what you mean by "the answer." He's proven that he has the ability to be a very solid role player in this league. It seems that he may even be an adequate starter at the two. If he keeps improving his outside shot as well as other aspects of his game (i.e. rebounding and passing), he can definitely have a long and productive career. That being said, his upside is relatively limited. That doesn't mean the Jazz shouldn't keep him around, but getting a wing with a higher upside and the ability to create his own shot more consistently and effectively than the Jazz's current wings should still be one of the team's top priorities come draft time.

Jazz liked him enough to ship out Brewer. That should tell you something about how highly the Jazz think about him.

I honestly don't know what else this kid would have to do to win over folks around here. He's defending, he's hitting shots, he's not making a lot of mistakes, he's playing within the offense. He's been about flawless.

I like him just the way he is. I don't think we need an upgrade to a Vince Carter or Monta Ellis at the 2. But, if Brandon Roy was available I'd think about it ;)

IMHO he's everything we need from our SG. Fits in perfectly. What more could one ask?

That playoffs last season hurt the jazz confidence in Brewer and than when he started out this season struggling more and more with his jumpshot, that made it easier for the jazz to let him go. It was unfortunate, i was a big brewer fan, but it was a business decision.

I like Wesley Matthews he's pretty solid player and cheap
