Just so I understand your post, are you taking the position that Rose has already done what he needs to have done to have his number retired no matter what level he plays at, or how long he is a Bull, going forward?

In my mind, yeah. I don't know how the people making those decisions think about it though. Before the ACL injury, Rose was already one of the most iconic athletes in Chicago history, and had brought a greater level of relevance and excitement to the Bulls than anyone besides Jordan. I think that's the kind of stuff you retire jerseys for, not stuff like career stats and accolades.

If Rose retires tomorrow or demands a trade he's not getting his Bulls jersey retired.

I vote for the A-train...dude was amazing, but wasn't here long enough, but most importantly...didn't win a title.

I think that either Rose or Noah if either makes it 9 years and wins a title.

The one after will be Doug ;)

You know I understand perfectly that some people feel that Kirk doesn't deserve to have his jersey retired, as stated I'm in the middle so it really doesn't bother me whichever way it pans out, but it's somewhat laughable that to make their points people have to belittle Kirk's achievements as though he just messed around for almost a decade with the Bulls and didn't nothing of relevance.

He has done nothing to get his jersey retired, he is just a fan favorite, he only got stats because he has been a long tenured Bull, well that's all rubbish. The guy was an under-dog the moment he stepped on to the NBA coming with a class with future hall of famers. The fact that he has been with the Bulls for almost a decade is an achievement upon itself, and the fact that he was able to contribute consistently as he has and still attain the statistics he has accumulated as a Bull, well that's a whole lot of achievement and commitment to one franchise.

You may not feel that the guy may not be deserving of having his jersey retired as a Bull, but lets not act like he hasn't provided a whole lot to the franchise either, and just treat him as though he was just a fan favorite 'mascot' either that just happened to stick around out of pure luck. He has provided great service and commitment to a sports franchise that we all love, and he should actually be appreciated.

The Bulls franchise has been around for almost 50 years now, lets not act like it's one of the new franchises and Kirk just happened to be one of in the top 3 in many categories out of luck either. He will definitely not go down as one of the greatest NBA players in history, but he should go down as one of the best in Bulls history, though clearly not in the top echelon of great Bulls, but still one of the best no doubt.
Why so serious?

No one is saying Kirk is some scrub we picked up off the street and had a middling NBA career.

People find the insinuation that he would somehow be in the discussion to have his jersey retired to be absurd.
Because it is. He is essentially his era's BJ Armstrong, no one is talking about Armstrong getting his jersey retired.

He was a solid player who helped the Bulls get back to being a competitive franchise.
But he was not a franchise guy, he was not able to sustain his peak level of play for very long, part of that due to injuries but he was on a decline numbers wise before that.

When you talk about hanging a jersey from the rafters you are talking about iconic players that are synonymous with the franchise and all of it's fans.
Kirk has not come close to that. He is a hard working lunch pail guy and that's great.

Two players have the potential to get their jersey retired that currently play for the Bulls.
Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah. Both will have to be play at a elite level for a good 6-7 more seasons for that to be a absolute guarantee. I mean multiple all-star games, a all NBA defensive team or two, maybe even another singular player award for each. Even then, without a title people will bristle at it.

Artis Gilmore, Reggie Theus, Dennis Rodman, Norm Van Lier, Chet Walker, Orlando Woolridge & probably Luol Deng are ahead of Kirk for jersey retirement.
He does not have the sustained level of play to merit a retirement ahead of any of those guys.

For Kirk's case, as it's been iterated, more deserving candidates were "snubbed". Unless his post-playing career with us is going to be legendary like people say the second coming of Sloan, I don't think the Bulls would and should do it. Though Kirk is more accomplished as a player, I think he could sort of be like the Tom Boerwinkle of this era. The old timers will speak fondly of him for a handful of those crazy nights but more so as a long serving and very solid player that wore the Bull's spirit and uniform with pride. If this current Bulls team can win a chip, Kirk will irrefutably have a place in people's memory as a contributor on a championship team where his past heroics will have an easier time latching on, that is also not a bad way to be remembered imo.

The thread question can also be about this current team. If the current team wins a championship, how many of the current team members jerseys will be retired. If they win, it also means they will probably stick around another year or two at the minimum(guys like Kirk). They will definitely go deep into the playoffs assuming Derrick is healthy.

I would think then it opens up Kirk, Joakim and Derrick as the possibilities based on their overall work(assuming all of them will play for 8-9 years on the Bulls as the minimum) and being part of a championship team.

as being a huge fan of Hinrich (grew up watching the baby bulls), if he were to win one with the Bulls this year (fingers crossed), it would dope to see his jersey be retired one day, also along with Noah and Rose. 3 players from the same ship team, hanging up there with Jordan/Pippen, sooooooo sick to think about.

I definitely agree that there are worthy candidates without going into current players. It's a shame they aren't already in the rafters
