Every Bulls team he's coached has over-achieved to one degree or another, including this one. Does that make him a top 3 or 5 coach? I'm not sure rankings matter. Because you are right, winning matters. And Thibs wins.
There are two things here
1. Thibs has won a lot of regular season games by going 100% for 82 games and sometimes it has seem to impacted his team come the playoffs
2. Thibs career playoff record of 17-22 (even the 10-7 with Derrick record doesn't scream woo hoo since that team was a #1 seed both times) isn't what I would call impossible to get rid of
I'm not saying Thibs deserves to be fired but I think that this season matters a lot in deciding to bring him back
Every season matters in deciding whether to bring him back. I wanted to have Skiles' baby until about one month into the season in which he "resigned." In the blink of an eye, it became obvious he needed to go.
But Thibs' raw playoff record numbers don't have much meaning given the circumstances he dealt with.
I am not saying he's not flawed. At any given time since he first came here, there have always been 2-3 different things he is doing that I don't like. There may come a time when a season reveals that those things have become too big to overlook relative to his virtues. Maybe it will be this season. I've said since this summer that this season will be Thibs' biggest test. So far, there's a lot I don't like:
1. Noah is playing too much relative to quality.
2. Taj continues to play not enough due to quality.
3. Mirotic should play more as well (though this has steadily improved).
4. His handling of McDermott appeared abysmal (though I'm hopeful that was connected to the injury).
Those aren't small things. And they are similar to mistakes he's made in the past as well. But on the whole, Thibs has my support.
