I just don't see us trading Zach in a "bag of magic beans" (i.e. a young decent player and a couple of future 1sts in the teens or 20's). I'd consider guys with #1 option potential like MPJ or maybe Herro, and definitely a guy like Simmons. Zach is showing me improved defense and less chucking this year...I want guys who continue to improve every year because they are obviously doing something right in how they prepare and it has a contagious effect on young guys. We had that with Deng who passed it along to Taj and Butler.
I would love to find a way to deal for Monte Morris in Denver or Rubio in Minn. Other than Simmons, those guys would be great for us.
I understand your point of view, but I'd be completely fine with a bag of beans package for Zach. I'm pretty sure that if we don't trade him, he's leaving in two years. And even if he isn't, he'll be looking for that 30+mil/year that he probably deserves, but that I wouldn't be willing to pay with this roster.
Just as examples of the type of player I'm talking about (not necessarily realistic targets), I'd probably be willing to deal him for one of Troy Brown Jr / Sekou Doumbouya/ Tyrese Haliburton / Jarrett Culver + a lightly protected 1st rounder.
I could deal with paying Zach if he becomes a plus defender and a more efficient scorer this season (as he's done the past couple games). His remaining chucking happens more when he's the primary ball handler, which is solvable either through Coby's improvement or replacement (which is much easier to find that Zach's offense). Also, the opportunity cost of signing Zach is likely to be low as the FO, if they do their job, should be able to keep enough flexibility to bring in another MAX player in the future.
