and i'm saying that you don't have to. the odds of getting a franchise-type player are the same whether you keep the picks or trade them all for a #1 overall
What you're saying: three honda Accords > one Mercedes. My point is you can only "drive" one car, so while the dollar value of three Honda Accourds is greater than a Mercedes, you would rather have one Mercedes than three Hondas because when you get down to it, you want the absolute best car you can get.
bad analogy. you can't only play the best draft pick of the bunch (one of which quite possibly will be better than carmelo "mercedes" anthony anyway)
but using your mercedes analogy, let's say you're dan leno (nephew of jay) and have $300K with which to purchase a roster of 12 automobiles. you may drive only 5 of those cars in any given 6 month period (must be alternated - 5 guys on the court at once). you really want a particular new mercedes sedan (fully stocked!) that retails for $60K to be the jewel of your collection. problem is, the company is no longer making them. and for that matter, the economy's bad so all car companies have recently decided to only sell significantly less expensive cars. each mercedes still in stock of the type that you want is spoken for, but some guy tells you you can have the title to his for $100K. do you do it? there's no way you'll find a better car to drive, but you still have 11 more to buy
now, maybe the nets reeeeeealy want their mercedes. they're banking on jealous neighbors (season ticketholders) being dazzled by the crown jewel and not noticing the quality of the other vehicles, most of which will have to be driven quite a bit. hopefully it's the mercedes they're driving that day they see the hot chick one car over out on the road. but it probably won't be
