I would plan on treating it as if we are contenders next season. I don't know if we will be - it depends on how Rose comes back - but if Rose makes a strong comeback we should try to have the best possible team to make a run next season. Miami will be a year older. Indiana might lose Stephenson and some of their guys are getting old too. Taj and Noah are in their primes. I think we should go for it next year, and even if we don't win, at least see how far we can go with a healthy Rose.
If there's a trade for Dunleavy that makes sense and would make us better, I'm all for that, but I'm not for dumping him for capspace. If it turns out that we need that capspace to sign Melo or someone else, we can probably unload him in the offseason or include him in a sign-and-trade.
In your view do we need to trade/amnesty Boozer to go after FA this season?
I think we do as I don't see how the team as is with Rose+ Mirotic cuts it. We need at least reasonable depth so Thibs doesn't play Butler 48 mins a game and another guy with scoring mentality.
I'd dump Dunleavy for a pick to go all in for Stephenson--I don't think melo is realistic so I'm not even considering it. I think Lance+ Mirotic plus not losing anything else or any picks would ultimately be the best team we can field next year and future. If we miss out on Lance the longterm plan isn't ruined--so it's worth the 1 year window with Dunleavy next year (for me at least). I don't see Pacers doing us any S&T favors--I'd want to be able to make a move without any contingencies. If Lance doesn't work we still would need some money to get wing players at MLE ish level.
Dunleavy has value and a great contract but his short window means he's a little more expendable to me.
