Neither offensive line can do much against the other's def. line.

Just saw a video of williams (supposedly) getting pranked into thinking Ben Johnson was reaching out to him saying he’s the new HC. Text made it seem like he was skeptical that it was really Ben Johnson but showed excitement just in case. They also FaceTimed him. Kind of funny.

Dumb play calling by Texas. 1st and goal from the 1- you have 4 tries to get one yard. Instead they run it outside and lose 6 yards. Ohio just intimidated them I guess.

it does at least give some spotlight to minority candidates, though

And it’s not a matter of support for Poles. It’s a lack of support for the idea that someone with BJ’s credentials would think that they could come in the door making demands about who the GM should or shouldn’t be. Tomlin, McVey, Shanahan…..fine. Johnson, no. It would indicate to me that his head may not be in the correct place.

Agreed 100%

A man who has no rings or even have made the SuperBowl to be given that sort of control or for him to assume that would be mind boggling. But I have a feeling that this might be something that was created by the media as opposed to actually coming from him.

He’s probably expressed having a great working relationship with the GM and somewhere along the lines “requesting GMs to be removed” in favor of his hiring might’ve been added onto this. Something similar to how media tried to say Caleb wanted part ownership.

Poles seems like a pretty easy going charismatic guy though. It also helps that they are similar in age as well. I feel like Poles can win Johnson over but we’ll see.

Also not firing Eberflus last year helps when convincing a new coach that Poles will show support despite outside media pressure calling for Flus head a year ago, giving Flus a shot to prove himself again.

I think Johnson biggest concern is roster construction and having real say so in who we draft and go after in free agency. I don’t feel like Flus had a lot of say so in that regard.

I would think a HC always has a lot of input into what changes are made to the roster. The HC knows more than the GM about where they need help. The GM likely has much more insight into the scouting profiles of college players, and maybe even NFL players, and of course knows the ins and outs of what can be done wisely in regards to the salary cap. But I would think they work hand in glove in most cases.

Bears added this guy:

McFadden, a former fifth-round pick by the Chargers in 2023, played 13 games, including two starts, for Los Angeles. He was selected out of Clemson, where he had five-position versatility along the offensive line. McFadden is a depth piece along the offensive line, where he's been among the inactives for most of the year.

I remember Mike Tomlin with the Steeler was initially viewed as a Rooney Rule interview that they only made because of the rule, and he got the job and has gone on to a legendary career.

While it does create interviews that wouldn't happen otherwise and maybe those interviews are long shots, it does get people in the room and a chance to impress and a chance to practice for future interviews and a chance to increase their reputation. It also does so while often allowing them to do so with less experience which probably helps mitigate issues of the pipeline not always having strong candidates.

Not a perfect solution, but better than nothing.

I'd like to think that the top priority during the interview process would be how the prospective candidate can make the current roster improve their performance on the field, not necessarily who to draft or sign in FA and certainly not request a new GM. Johnson, or whomever, isn't going to be the head coach of a team loaded with ProBowl level talent. If BJ thinks he's coming to an offense with five probowl level players like he did in Detroit, he needs to adjust his expectations.

Ben
Vrabel
Carrol

I think that will be the Bears order. Vrabel will go the Pats. Raiders or Bears for Ben. If Bears don’t get Ben it will be Carrol with his hire of coach in waiting. I bet Carrol coaches 3 seasons and turn it over.

It’d be a failure missing out on Ben but Carrol is a massive upgrade to Flus and Waldron. He’d build culture and professionalism and the team would always be prepared.

In his defense Cam Williams has been battling a knee sprain. If it had not been a playoff game he probably would not have played. I still think he's going to have a good career as a guard at the next level. He'd be a real road grader. He lacks lateral speed to block speed rushers as a tackle, but he has a good anchor and powerful hands to work in the interior of the line.
