There is no bigger fan and admirer of Deng around here than me. And I would love for him to retire a Bull. But he has 2 or possibly 3 guaranteed years on his deal I think. That's just too many for his current level of play.

I wouldn't have minded Rondo staying for another year, but waiving him (barring a logical trade arising which is unlikely) is the right move.

If he was attached to Ingram or some pick I thought would be top 10 I'd take Deng back. The bonus would be I would be happy to have a player I like back on the team. I was always a passenger on the Luol fan club train you engineered.

I'd take Deng if we got the Lakers' unprotected 2020 first rounder back.

I expect the Lakers to be good by then, so we're not talking about a great pick, but we're asset starved, and I don't think we'll be free agency players for the next 2-3 years at least.

This is very surprising to me. I believe that if Rondo is waived there's a very good chance we will not match an offer for Niko but we'll see. Waving Rondo smells like a very intentional tank job in my opinion.

A trade would be much better including draft picks but even releasing Rondo is coherent with our rebuilding mode.Hopefully a buyout with Wade too.
It's good to know that they want to save money for Dunn but it's depressing to know that the Bulls want to invest in Payne. He showed nothing last season.

This front office is such a disappointment. They just piss me off every time they make a move. They couldn't keep rondo for at least a year? He's perfect for this team. Would of been a leader and helped this team grow. F gar/Pax.

I thought that was happening for sure. Why pay for Niko

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

Game 2 of the Celtics series Rondo is likely better. He was an animal.

Unfortunately, the remainder of Rondo was only slightly better than what I could have done, as a sub 6 foot mid 30s fella who never played any competitive basketball. He was horrible.

Rondo was a big reason why the bulls even made the playoffs. And he was awesome in games 1-2. If he didn't get hurt they win that series, without a doubt and today maybe they wouldn't be rebuilding.

Niko has been working out with the team and Pax keeps saying he's returning. Why think he's not? He'll be back.

I would keep him or Wade. I don't think we would do both.

Why? One mentor is good enough and an expiring deal to trade for people wanting to clear cap space but with a great chance to get a future asset.

Waiving Rondo is a perfect move for tanking.

Agree with you both. Any type of future asset would make that move worth it for us IMO.

I think I read that there was a chance we'd rework his contract for lower $ over a few years, which would require waiving him first.

Could also mean we are still going after Milos Teodosic.

Or that we are just going to let Dunn/Payne/Grant/Valentine do their thing.

I'm neutral on Rondo as long as he's developing young guys for low $ and low min.

Best case scenario

- Resign Niko, bring Rondo back on a smaller deal and with full non-guarantee next year
- one of the Pg develops in to ok starter
- Lavine comes back, shows value, you flip for a first at the deadline
- Two of Niko, Lori, Portis look good so that you can trade one for value, keep the other as a value 4
- Bulls aggressively mine d-league for quality bigs and wings and find one or two
- Valentine and Zipser take steps to be quality rotation players with 5th starter upside
...

Of course. There was always, and should always, be discussion and doubt over whether it's better in a rebuild to maximize player and asset development, which Rondo is definitely good for IMO, or to maximize your next draft pick at the partial expense of existing player asset maximization. Rondo would definitely make guys look better and boost their trade value, as well as galvanize them.

So by dumping him, our guys like LM, Portis, Lavine etc will likely have lower trade value in a year tham they would with rondo, but our pick will be better. It's always a valid debate IMO.

If we really wanted to rework his contract, we wouldn't be trying to trade him. I don't think anyone from the Bulls ever said anything about that. It was an idea floated by a poster here.

I don't see it happening. I think Gar has wanted him gone since last year when he was suspended and benched. Rondo started popping off about the FO and about Fred. That was the end of the road for him. They have been trying to trade him since to no avail.

I would be shocked if Rondo is on this roster next season.

More lies from GarPax. "We love Rondo."

If they did they wouldn't be bringing in a 30 year old rookie to replace him.
