I wouldn't give away anyone for nothing. Well... PWill certainly but he is just such an outlier with his negative impact for 18 mil a season.
I think I started by saying that "barring trade" you're screwed. That may be where we are talking past each other. I am not answering the question posed in the OP, because I reject the assumption. My point was that Coby has value. So you trade Coby for better quality and higher salary. I don't think Coby is a starter on a great team (he would be an elite scorer off the bench) but I still recognize the value of his current contract. You add other players to make the salary work. So you end up with a better player while shedding a couple of guys you don't want on the roster anyway. As you said, "everyone else is expiring" and are incidental for a team who wants Coby and also wants to shed some salary after this season.
If I answered the specific question it would be a simple answer. Sign Tre (likely better than anyone you take with the pick).
Fair enough. Though it's hard for me to wrap my head around your presumption that we can get a better player than Coby with Coby being the best piece going out while you're rejecting the very real plausible scenario that we simply can't find a trade that AK (or you or I) like.
Tre or another MLE signing would almost certainly be better than #45, but on a longer contract that compromises our flexibility the next few offseasons.
Again, I will reference my original quote. "Barring a trade, you're screwed". I am not presuming anything. I am hoping. If there is no trade to be found for any of these guys you simply have to ride them another season, and whether or not you give a roster spot to Tre or to the 45th pick really doesn't matter much. The problem with that is that unless someone is looking for expirings at the trade deadline just to shed salary you are going to have nothing but middling money to move forward with. (That assumes you signed Giddey and Coby to big contracts). Good luck luring a big free agent to play with a core of Giddey, Matas and White. Essentially, you are starting your rebuild/tank/youth movement/window (whatever you want to call it) over with Giddey and Matas. Enjoy the next 5 seasons of "rebuilding".
We could have huge cap space even after paying Giddey plenty, especially cause I think Coby's cap hold won't be much next summer.
I get the opinion that barring a trade we're screwed, it's definitely a fair perspective, but we still have to make decisions even if we're screwed, and we often discuss those decisions here lol.
