Poles is saying this again in the same language, literally at a moment while Stroud is terrorizing the countryside.
We can also wonder if Warren raised his eyebrows when his GM gave the dreaded vote of confidence to the head coach that Poles hired who seems out of his depth as a head coach.
Yep. Exactly. Can them both!
Get Harbaugh and an experienced GM.
I agree on Harbaugh. I think the timing is aligned right now with the Michigan controversy. The University and Harbaugh may both think it's time for him to move on. And what better place to resume his NFL coaching career than his former team?
As for Poles I do not agree. No GM hits on every move. But when Poles makes a mistake , like Claypool, he deals with it. He had every reason to want to give Fields a full year to prove himself. QB is probably the hardest thing to do in professional sports. Every QB taken in the draft is a crap shoot, either due to good players going to awful teams, the player not fulfilling his potential, or unfortunate injury. For every Patrick Mahomes there are 7 Ryan Leafs. It's easy to look backwards with our 20/20 vision and say he should have taken Stroud. Considering what Poles inherited from Pace after the disastrous Trubisky draft and the Mack trade I think Poles has done an admirable job overall. We had a lot of holes to fill. Still do. But for that #1 pick last year we got DJ Moore (our best receiver still in his prime), a lower first that became Darnell Wright (a solid starter for years to come), this year's #1 pick, and second round picks in 2023 and 2025. His picks last year:
Darnell Wright - Solid starter from Day 1
Gervon Dexter - Solid contributor, maybe 2nd best interior defensive lineman in the draft so far behind Jalen Carter
Tyrique Stevenson - Solid starter from Day 1
Zacch Pickens - Contributor. Could still develop into something more
Roschonn Johnson - A beast. He will eventually be our #1 RB
Tyler Scott - Has potential. Needs to keep running on his routes. Might get better with experience
Noah Sewell - Already a contributor as back up LB and in special teams
Terell Smith - Made the final roster, a work in progress
Travis Bell - Falcons signed him off our practice squad. (In retrospect I wish we had kept him and dumped Velus Jones)
That's not a bad track record at all.
Best case scenario is that we can pry Harbaugh away and that he and Poles can develop a relationship to help bring the Bears back into the Playoff picture. Harbaugh has been a winner at every level, with every team he has ever coached. Give him some input into personnel moves, especially our ultimate QB decision. And let him turn this franchise back around.
