No, it seems Pill is getting the 1B duty and D'Alessio is DH'ing. I would think D'Alessio is the better prospect as well, meaning he should be getting the call at first instead of audtioning fo AL clubs.

The knock I've heard on D'Alessio is that he is slow and not very athletic. You do need a bit of flexibility to play first and if he doesn't have it that could explain why he is not playing 1B.

In any case, it should be fun to watch both players develop this season.

ok....got my first look at Alderson. He doesn't seem to have dominating stuff, but the results were pretty good. Six innings and one run, with 4 k's. A few of the outs were hard hit balls. He was throwing high 80's, low 90's with good command.

The one thing he'll have problems is his time to home plate. For the most part, he used a high leg kick out of the stretch. Occasionally, he'd mix in a slide step, but lost a few MPH when he did that. Pill didn't play. Again, D'Alessio was DH'ing. They put a C at 1B. None of the position players stood out at all. The best guy on the field seemed to be SS Sharlon Schoop,

The Ports had some pretty impressive guys. Trevor Cahill was pretty dominant on the mound. He just turned 20, so he's a little older than Alderson. But, he was bringing it at 94-95 and only allowed one legit hit in 6 innings. Chris Carter at 1B looked pretty good with the bat and seemed to have nice size.

How is his build Hop? Could he stand to put on a few pounds? Do you see him as a guy like Cain who could go 9 every outing?

He's on the lean side, so getting bigger wouldn't be a problem. He's definitely not a Cain-esque build. Probably closer to Mike LaCoss. :D Long and gangly.

He has kind of an awkward, herky-jerky delivery where Cain has your classic, compact delivery. I wish I would have seen Cain at San Jose to compare, but never did.

I recall seeing Shawn Estes in San Jose back when the Giants first traded for him and everything about him screamed major leaguer (too bad he had a 10 cent head). I just didn't get that same feeling with Alderson. But, he's so darned young for high A and the results have been good so far. So, you can't really complain.

Why hasn't Schierholtz been called up?

Andy D'Alessio is just insane. He might be in the majors within 2 years if he keeps swinging a big stick.

Schierholtz hasn't been called up because he is out of options. If he goes up he stays for good or the Giants risk loosing him (which they would). That is why.

At this rate, it will be in the AL since he doesn't play in the field.

Can we package him with Zito?

Bumgarner with a nice outing:
6.1 IP / 2H / 0 ER /8k's / 0 BB

He's got 20 k's and 3 BB in 18 IP, so that's encouraging.

On the "What Might Have Been" front, Beau Mills (my choice for the Giants first pick last year) is struggling a little in A+ Carolina League.

His walk rates have been solid as a pro but his total offensive output has been marginal so far dating back to last season. I still think the Giants made the right choice, though I would have had Heyward under consideration as well.

Today 6 IP, 10K's, 2 HA, 0 BB, and lowered his ERA to 1.02. If he goes Wednesday (looks likely), I'll have to check him out.

Bumgarner with another stellar outing....10 k's in 6 IP, 3 HA, BB, O R. Now 35 K's, 7BB in 28 innings, 1.07 WHIP, and ERA down to 3.21

Maybe he'll see A+ in the second half.

I don't know. He seems to inconsistent to me. I think he is someone to bring along very slowly. Keep him in A- this year and A+ next year and then AA and so on. There is really no need to rush him.

Looking at the roster of pitchers, he's three years younger than anyone on that squad. Other than his first outing or two, he's been excellent.

One level at a time would have him in the majors at 22. That would be quite an accomplishment. Supposedly, he's not very polished. So, that may be the best approach.
