The big contracts of Terry, Stackhouse are good example. The offseason bringing in of old spares like EJ, Juwan instead of younger players is also a good example.

I don't really know how responsible Avery was in bringing in these guys, but to the extent that he was responsible, he should get a ton of blame. I personally think he had a lot to do with it and therefore lump Avery in with the front office.

I guess I just see a lot of people blaming Avery's sideline coaching for our troubles, but it seems to me that it's the front office causing most of it (and that FO includes Avery, IMO).

This team needs a major re-tooling.

I agree. I think we have to change the talent in our top 5, find a more diverse mix of talent at the lower spots, and then find a coach who can bring it all together. Easier said than done...

We both agree on the lack of talent level. A team with Stackhouse as the starting SG (with backups in the likes of George, Eddie Jones) and a foul-prone C (with essentially undersized PFs as his backup) is not going to cut it no matter what.

And I think Avery has a large part in that. It is no secret he prefers vets over younger players, that he has an ungodly amount of faith in the likes of Stackhosue and Terry closing games for us and drawing up plays for them, etc etc. He also talks on about veteranly leadership which is what EJ and Juwan and George are supposed to bring from the bench besides their air balls.

Technicals can swing the momentum one way or the other obviously, and Avery gets them at awful and crucial times in the game... Nellie would get them at moments that would fuel the team and make them play with more energy and heart afterwards, but when Avery gets them, the team goes down with him.

Wire Reports
Dallas, Texas
from beat writer Jim Spanarckel

"The Dallas Mavericks have shut down Dirk Nowitzki and found an unlikely source to fill their roster; their 43 year old coach. "It really was the best move." Avery was quoted after filling out the required paperwork. "We need some leadership on court and it's time to take the pacifier out". Avery's first game will be Sundays' game against the Golden State Warriors, one of Dallas' chief rivals in the fight for the last playoff spot. "Avery will bring a lot of the intangibles" said veteran Mav Jerry Stackhouse. "I know nobody can stop him from going left".

Avery becomes the first player coach on a playoff team since Bill Russell's final years with the Celtics. "We're hoping to capture some of that old magic" said Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. "The Celtics went into that final championship year as a low seed, just like we will. Bottom line, it's Avery's team".

Avery said he expects to start Sunday and guard Baron Davis, and will move Jason Kidd to the starting two guard. "We like Stack coming off the bench. Several times, he has outscored the opponent's bench all by himself". When asked about being out of the league for five years, Avery scoffed, saying "This gives us championship winner experience at the point guard position. That's something we've been needing for some time. We probably don't lose to Miami in 2006 if we had done this then."

Dirk was non committal about the move, saying "I'm looking forward to seeing what Avery will bring out there. Obviously he has been out of the league a while, but he keeps himself in great shape challenging the current players to one on one throughout the season." Jason Kidd also weighed in "I'm just here to help the team. Avery calls all the plays anyway."
