I understand why Nico could go all in on Markannen when he was stuck with KP, but throwing away cap space for THJ was THE mistake, no getting KP from the Knicks which was a good gamble.
THJ was the saving grace for Cuban's ego when he missed out on Kyle Lowry. He came out openly and said Lowry was Plan A that summer. Had he signed Lowry to 25M per, he wouldn't even think of spending that much money on THJ. Mavs are just stuck with a backup plan of a backup plan, and trying to make it work at that. Too many trade and draft mistakes have buried the organization behind and they are playing catch up now.
I was bizarre how things went down, I remember reading the negotiations were stuck, and Mavs gave up on extending him, 1-2 days later Shams/Woj reported the 75/4 contract, when the Markannen situation arised, Nico tried to trade Powell + 1st + 2 2nds for him, but Bulls didn't wat Powell extra year because of Lavine incoming supermax, this is when the question of trading Maxi for Markannen came up, because Maxi had team option, Markannen was left stranded with no bidders until CLE worked out the multi team trade with POR.
We, on this board wanted to re-sign THJ, but for 60/4 which would've left more than 20 millions of FA, Nico wanted Bullock also so he went the non-cap route, extended THJ and Boban, picked up WCS option, and used MLE on Bullock and BAE on Brown, who was another Kidd blunder in addition to McGee.
