Not even a Band-Aid. Signing Sal Fasano is putting a piece of one-ply paper towel on a gaping wound.

Just for the record, it is a minor league deal...

This is starting to look a lot like the latter Gord Ash days. Just signing random pieces. Small upgrades, or switching guys up. No real sorta plan anymore. How has JP kept his job?

JP has stated his plan about A MILLION TIMES. Aren't you listening? He's sticking with what he's got now and wants to run it for next year. All he's doing now is adding depth and making upgrades. That's really all you can do when your plan is wanting to stick with the same team for the following season.

Nobody likes this plan. But with the heart of the offseason over and no real changes happening, all you can do is shrug your shoulders now. Deal with it.

This is sort of a nice surprise...having an experienced lead-off hitter signed may be the first step in seeing Johnson

He doesn't really have a choice. His drafting from 2002-05 has been subpar, and most of the team's money was spent on the current core group of players. We knew JP wasn't going to rebuild, so this was really the only alternative. Try to get as much out of this group as possible. Let the new GM rebuild (whenever that happens).

I'm just glad he tried to take a chance for once (Rios/Lincecum). He showed he wasn't just sitting on his hands.

MB, how much of a chance did he really take with Lincecum though? Personally i would have thrown in a Thigpen, or a Romero, or a Purcey into the deal to get it done (I may have even pondered Litsch)- yet I never heard anything about us offering to sweeten the pot at all.

Its the same as the Lilly for Howard deal where he wouldn't give up Bush or McGowan. There are countles other examples of where he has a good deal on the table and he screws it up by not forcing the action a little.

But you're right about the letting the new GM rebuild. That's actually why I was excited about Lincecum, and that's why this (1 year) contract is actually a good thing. It doesn't handcuff anyone.

Lilly for Howard??

When was this rumoured? And What was the deal exactly? I don't recall hearing about this one.

This was rumoured the year before Howard's rookie season (although he was coming off a year at AAA where he had over 50 extra base hits). Thome was still relatively healthy and blocking Howard's progress. The Phills wanted Lilly and JP asked for Howard (since we didn't have any power hitting prospects in the pipeline). The basics were just a straight up swap although eventually I think Gross and Rosario were included. As I understand it the deal fell through because we wouldn't include any real pitching prospects (McGowan, Bush etc...) to soften the loss of their best hitting prospect.

Aww Man! Could you imagine having Howard now? There would of never been a need to sign Frank Thomas, but even if we did. To have the middle of the order Rios, Wells, Howard, Thomas, Glaus is dangerous...Just put solid on base guys in front of them, and the runs would be pouring in.

And to think that we ended up trading Gross and Bush anyway for Lyle Overbay. When we could of grabbed Howard if we threw them in with Lilly who left anyway.
